Show CHARLEY WILLIAMSON- A Narslml's Posse Track Him to His Stronghold. And I'U'ool HI i itiiliirf a( lhr lii)o of .Shut On ii. Tin days ;i-n Deputy Sheriff Flori- i Hid Deputy Marshals Fratt and Cannon mysteriously took tin ir departure de-parture ftom S.dt Lake, and hied them away to (he wikh-rucns, amu-d and quipped for war. Their going wub kept a aei'ret as much as bitch o.vurronci s can be; but now they ha ' r- iui iied, having aueci ss'uily accomplished Ihrir object and the feci el is out. Throe mot tlm ago the sor.nwhat notorious desperado, Charley Char-ley Williamson, eticaped from tint L'tah penitentiary, which institution lie owed a seven years sentence. His liberty once attained, ho repaired , to his old thieves' rendezvous in tlm wilderness of Uintah county, Wyoiir 1 iug, and once more engaged in the live stock biihiness, a pro-letiaion pro-letiaion which flourishes handsomely in that wild region where the population popula-tion is composed almost entirely of horse and cattle thieves. Ho gathered ga-thered around him a few associates, and toolher they lived and prospered away from the haunts of civilization amonj; their cattle on a thousand hills tor all the live stock in that seel iou Were theirs, xvheu they wanted tii take them. It has been known that Wiiiianison and his party wero somewhere in that region, but tho exact locality could not bo filed until very recently, when the officers above uaimd started out lor their nian.J Avoiding public highways and tTiO , hule settlements as much as po j nble the oflic.al p irty wended '.heir, way through canons, over mountains, j iun-3 valleys, until lat Saturday' evening they halted within a short! distance ot Williamson's cabin, on j I K Iitepelle creek, which flaws into ( Green river about SO miles north el ( the Green fiver station on the U. P., j It was understood that WiIlianiKiu hiid j with hint gang of desperate men, j ail of w t'.oui wero well armed and 'pu'parid to resist the law audits oiheem even unto ahevldiug b'.oud. The Uiror of Uintah county, Jack , W.uUms, was believed to be there, I hence caution was necessary to sue-, ee.iuil the pari of tho officers. The latter, Siturday evening, surrounded i Williamson's cabin, saw that deeper-I deeper-I ado go in and out, and- heard the Voici ol others a they conversed -side the hut. Ail night the deputies st.nl at their posts, and at the brr.it o'day Sunday morning, when Williamson stepped out of the cabin to inhale the fresh air of the morn, a double-barreled shot gun and two" rifles atoixl gaping at him, and within with-in a few (eel of his person. Braver men than he would have trembled sli.-htly at ei; oh a Biht, and he was nut long in i obeying the comujan.J to throw 1 up his hanuj. Ho vra promptly . 'ironed, and his p.ils yet in the cabin, . 1 were ni-ide to march out singly, and j hands pointing skywards. There: I were fuur of the gang, all of whom I were secured, and the officers with J their ''gAnie" retraced their stops to 'this city. Two of the prisoners were leetat liberty at 1 o'clock yesUrday ! morning. Jt was not known that , they wero guilty of any crime, yet j the deputies- wisely brought them , along, lest they would spread the 'news of the capture, and probably cather a posse of -roughs and attempt a rescue. The prisoner besides Wil-; hams in, brought through, is Tom Gougb, who is to be invited to ex-j plain certain stock transactions. We also understand there is a reward of; $250 awaiting his captors at Fort Brulger. The two men were cou- fined iu the city jail last eveniug, but will be takeu to the penitentiary to, day. The deputies paint Williamson's ranch iu giowum colors. Tuey say t it is ono of the finest grazing rpots in the mountains well watered and nutritious grasses growing luxur- j iantly. The nearest neighbor is forty j miles distant. The desperadoes have: asubjLuiti.il log cabin, and a coral into which the stolen horses are j driven and branded, or the owners' i brands defaced. Altogether the place , is admirably situated and particularly adapted for the reudezvoiu of the stock thieves anJ outlaws. They aro comparatively safe, as it is only a well organized and cautiously executed ex-ecuted plan liko 1 10 one just worked out that can dislodge them from their stronghold. They claim a large herd of cattle and horses that are ranging iq that vicinity, the majority, ma-jority, if not all ot which, have been stolen. Several head of stock stolen from parties in this territory were seen, by the officers, who estimate that not less than 1,000 head of horses and cattle belonging to men in Utah, aro now ranging in tho neighborhood neigh-borhood of Williamson's ranch. Tho officers named above i.re entitled en-titled to a good deal of credit for what they have dono in this matter, and now that Williamson is again in tho law's clulches, the community will bopo that such strict measures will be adopted in bis case that bis second escape will bo impossible. |
