Show BREAKING OF THK JORDAN DAM. Four Thousand Damages. On Monday night, about 11 o'clock, a break waa dlacovcred in the dam near Indian liapida near the head of Ihe Jordan river. It seems to havo given way at the side ot' the large waste gate, which was completed last July at an expense of 83,000. There was about twelve feet pressure at that point, and although the break was1 very small when first discovered, it was not long before the forco of the water carried everything before it, taking the gate in sections down the river a total wreck. Bishop Gardner, who had the contract con-tract for putting in the gate, was tent for, but when he got there it was tuo late to do anything. Tho break caused the river to rise eigh teen inches at Yest Jordan. Mr. liardner came down from the dam on the train yesterday afternoon, and reported the extent of the damages. He thinks the worst has been done. The water in the hike is now in a normal condition, and the rapids quite perceptible from where the flam spans the river. The breach made is about seventy feet, only a portion ot the masonry work being washed away. Hints have .been thrown out that the break was the result of malicious ma-licious action by some party or parties, as it is alleged that feelings exited relative to putting the dam there; but we are loth to credit or give ear to such surmises, and, in tho absence of proof to the contrary of our opinions, desire others to believe it tho work of tho ivitural elements consequent upon the freezing and thawing wbic.i has characterized the past tew weeks. The damage by the washing away of the dam is estimated ut some $4,-0O0, $4,-0O0, the original cost being fo,000. It was of soiid masonry and believed able to withstand double the pressure to which it was subjected. |
