Show OCONFLACRATIONS IN CHICAGO. CHI-CAGO. Chicago, 20. Between three nnd four o'clock this morning a. tire broke out under the central depot building, occupied by the Michigan &, Illinois r Central, .and tho C. B. tt Q. railroads, at the foot of Lake street, and in a I short time made such headway us to defy the fire department, the build-- build-- ing being entirely consumed. The baggage in tho C. B. & Q. baggage room -vas nearly all lost, only a few pieces being saved and taken to tho freight depot aeross the street. The baggage in the other room, at the l south end of the depot, was saved, the lire being just out, before it reached that far. .Nothing was saved from any of the ollices m connection with the depot, oil being swallowed in the , common destruction. Tho tracks were filled with cars and mostof them were saved, but the men were unable to remove a number of fine passenger cars. The Michigan Central railroad lost three passenger coaches and two Pullman sleepers. The C. B. & ; lost three coaches, including one Pullman Pull-man sleeper. The Illinois Central lose four coaches partly burned. The The Cincinnati air line lost one coach. , Tho loss is estimated at between $300,000 and $100,000; insurance unknown. un-known. The depot was a frame one, put up after the yreat fire for temporary tempor-ary use. . While this fire was in progress nnd claimed the attention of tlie fire department, de-partment, the bell sounded again and the announcement was that a, large stone front block, on State, between Van Btiren and Harrison streets, was also on fire. It was nearly twenty minutes before an engine reached the ground, and the flames made such progress that five buildings, from No. 294 to 302 inclusive, were consumed. The fire was first seen in Armstrong's paint Bhop and oil store, 296-20S, State. From this building it spread on either side to tho adjoining buildings. build-ings. The sufferers are Virts & Colby, furniture; Merwin &, Church, hardware; hard-ware; the Wove Wire Mattrass Co.; W. T. Stickney, ladies underwear; M. W. & T. Lester, furnaces. The loss is estimated at $200,000; Armstrong, on stock, $14,000, and building ibout $00,000; Merwin fc Church, No. 300 and 302, about the same; Wirts & Colby, about $1S,000. These buildings build-ings were new, having been erected since the great fire. |
