Eugal, rectifier, testified that Joyce had repeatedly told him that ho would manufacture crooked whisky and would be protected; pro-tected; that Joyce urged and encouraged encour-aged him to make all he coula handle; was always notified of visits from Washington officials. Witness paid John Leavenworth Leaven-worth two assessments for what was called the campaign of Hutchinson. The sixth ward fund reached $3,000 and all were required to contribute. From 1S72 the ring was composed of McDonald, Joyce, Fitzroy, Mc-Gee, Mc-Gee, McGuire, Patrick, Newcomb and Grosvenor, of the Democrat. The latter got $10,000 to let up on McGuire, when he was seeking nomination nomi-nation for mayor. Witness received a letter from C. W. Ford, in regard to certain matters. It waB. understood that $20,000 had to be raised for campaign purposes in 1872. Ford closed bis house for two days in 1S72, und was then allowed to proceed. The foreman of the Ultrich distillery distil-lery testified that Joyce was well posted post-ed as to the market prices and increased in-creased the assessment. When the mark t was brisk, we paid thirty five cents a gallon to the ring and when it rose to ninety cents they demanded forty-five cents which the distillers refused re-fused to pay. Louis Teneher testified that Jovce , told him to make thirty or forty bar rels weekly for the ring. Witness made from twenty-five to fifty barrels bar-rels of crooked whisky per week. Barton, agent? oi Bingham Bros., testified that Joyce had aotified him of the coming of agents to examine the distillery. Joyce claimed to have letters from Babcock. He also read parts of letters from the treasury and revenue departments; have seen letters let-ters signed by Avery, Holland and Rogers. His object was to show me the thing was understood at headquarters. head-quarters. Witness raised money for Hogue and others, part of which he understood was to go to Washington. Adjourned. Indianapolis, Ind., IS. Parties arrested ar-rested at Evansville, implicated in crooked whisky transactions, were brought before Judge Grestam, of the U. S. court to-day. M. Lewis, Col. Siraonson, John E. Phillips and Harrison Miller, were released on $5,000 bail, each. John W. and Gordon Bingham were held under guard, failing to secure the requsite amount of bail, $&,000. John W. Bingham started for Evansville tonight to-night under guard, to obtain the necessary security. The trials will commence on the 30th iuBt. |
