Show The Cily Books. As will be seen by the report of yesterday's procee. lings in the district court, published in this mora:ng''s Herald, Judge AIcKeau granted the ! prayer of the petition of C. C. Clements, Cle-ments, on the part Of himself and tho committee of " forty-five citizens," for a peremptory mandamus to compel com-pel the city recorder, Sir. Robert Campbell; to exhibit the city books, papers and rcconls j n his possession, and permit the petitioners to take copies of and make extracts there-: from. Wc expected his Honor would rule as ho lias done, the only ihicg that surprised us being that hej ever took eo much time to consider a question where Mormon, authorities were to bo Insulted and discommoded. discommo-ded. Xow, were it not for a provision provis-ion in the law which prevents the eminent juriut's decrees being absolute abso-lute and final, Mr. Campbell might takea recuperative trip in the country until "the commiUec of "forty-five" got through with his books, and that trip might bo extended over months, as the official books and papers in his possession aro numerous, and this self-appointed committee Would of course feel called upon to examine and copy everything in search of the "mare's nest" they arc so ai.xious to find. But this commuuily have already had occasion to be thiuikhil that Mc-ivean'ti Mc-ivean'ti decisions were not final and wo presume, from the number of that Missionary's ruling which have been reversal, that he also rcgivls that his "la,:is not supreme. We understand the case U lo bo appealed, and the ''forty-five"wi!l not have the privilege oi seeing those book, except rs the law provides, for another few months, and considering that judge Mclvean has rule1 that they are entitled to -aiakc tho coveted extracts and so forth, it is exceedingly doubtful if ihey are ever permitted to take the books into their possession. Wo utter this doubt knowing that lie-Kcan's lie-Kcan's decision and those of the Supreme Court do not always agree. FIREMEN'S Git AX I) EXCUP.SIOX TO OGDEN and RETURN.
