The well-known-publishing house of Lee & Shepard, of Boston, suspended payment on Saturday. The suspension involves the New York firm of Lee, Shepard and Dillingham. This morning the acting partner of the house, Mr. Dil-' lingham, made an unconditional as-1 Btgutuent to James Miller, the pub- . lisher, No. 045 Broadway. A private telegram this morning, from Boston, ; gives the liabilities of the senior firm 1 at $1,000,000, but Miller and other prominent publishers, who are well' informed in regard to the businecs of . the house, say that the Bum involved i will not exceed $o30,000; that tbeyt probably will be able to pay fifty cents' on the dollar. The New York branch; is comparatively a new conccrn,while Leo & Shepard are two-third owners, i the remaining 8 hare being owned by Dillingham. The debts of this house amount to about $150.-000. $150.-000. Miller, the assignee, took DOsscssion of the establishment, and after making a liberal allowance- for bad debts and depreciation of stock, ho estimates that tho concern will pay tho debts in full. The parent house of Lee & Shepard was established estab-lished in 1863, and did a veiy successful success-ful business up to the time of the Boston, in which iU losses were more , than $100,000. They made a deter-. deter-. mined effort to recover themselves, but owing to the general stagnation s of trade, had been at length forced tc i Buspend payment. The event is tht l cause of general regret, as the firm, t though young, was moat popular in the trade.
