Tobey, of Boston, informed Secretary Chandler this afternoon that he is obliged to decline the position of commissioner ot Indian aflairs, tendered him by the pros: dent. Tho commissioner of Indian affairs authorizes Win. Nicholson, Nich-olson, genera! agent of the Associated Committee of Friends in Indian aflairs, to say that Superintendent Hong has not been removed, and that his removal has not been contemplated, con-templated, and that his only connection con-nection with the Pottawattamie matters mat-ters is that as an officer of the government gov-ernment ho is diligently prosecuting those who have defrauded the Indians. In-dians. Friend Hoag desires tore-tire tore-tire from his present position whenever when-ever the board shall think proper to designate his successor. Secretary Chandler baa invited Commissioner Smith to remain in tho department as his confidential clerk, in immediate charge of tho business coming up to the secretary from the bureau. |
