Yesterday the several lodges of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in this city, celebrated the fifty-fifth an-niversaiyof an-niversaiyof American Odd.Fellowship, the first lodge of the present Order having heeu organized in Baltimore, Maryland, April 26th, 1819. by Thomas Widley and John Welch, two Englishmen, and John Duncan, John Cheatham and Richard Rush-worth. Rush-worth. The name of that lodge was Washington Lodgo No. 1. In this city there are three lodges and an encampment UtahLodge No. 1, Salt Lake Lodge No. 2, and Jordan Lodge No. 3, and Oquirrh Encampment Encamp-ment No. J. Enrly yesterday morning numerous tUgs were unfurled from stores and business houses in the central part of the city; at one. o'clock about HO members of the Onler met at Odd Fellows' Hall, over the California Store, where they donned their regal'a and organized for the procession, which started from that place one hour later. The procession, proceeded by the Thiitcenth Infantry band, playing the while, marched two abreast up East Temple street to First South, thence to Second East and south to the Institute. In-stitute. Tlie lodges marched in the I order ot their organization, the en-campment en-campment bringing up the rear the i post of honor. At the Inctitute the ' band played a couple of pieces, after which the opening ode was sung by tho members, J. J. Baynes accompanying accom-panying on the organ. Then followed tho opening prayer by Judge W. . Haydon, chaplain. Mr. Fred. Aucrbach, president of the day, then introduced the speaker of the day, Judeo J. C. Hemingray, who j made a brief but appropriate address. jThe band played another air, the I closing ode was sung by the members and the lodges reformed, in procession proces-sion marching down f:io street J to Third South thence to East j Temple and up that street to the 'hall. J The procession, with' tha lodge banners flying, presented a fery handsome appearance, the 'members generally being arrayed ia black, and wearing the regalia of the order. General E. M. Barnum was- gtand marshal, and he bad a deputy for 'teach lodge, Mr. J. Bamberger being from Utah lodge, Mr. J. F. Corker from Salt Lake lodge, Mr. Charles Adler from Jordan lodge and Mr. Jacob Behruan from Oquirrh encampment. en-campment. The colebratiou closed last evening with a grand ball at Hussey's Hall which was kept up till early morn. |
