All of the members were present but the Postmaster General, Jewell, who was represented by Assistant Postmaster General Marshall. Most of the session ses-sion was devoted to a discussion of the features of the annual reports of the members of the cabinet and the portions thereof to be embraced in the President's message. The secretary of the treasury has not yet tendered to any one the posi-tioa posi-tioa of supervising architect. The names of Euveral persons residing in Chicago, Philadelphia and New York have been mentioned, but the secretary secre-tary says it is his desire to have a personal per-sonal interview with the applicant before making the appointment. The President, this morning, received re-ceived a telegram from Tusoambia, Ala., saying that the effects of the hurricane of the 22d inst. were terrible ter-rible and that destitution prevails to an extent no language can express. There is no money in the county treasury and the sufferings of the destitute des-titute cannot be relieved by individuals, individ-uals, and it is therefore that this appeal ap-peal is made to the President lor immediate im-mediate relief by an order for the supply of army rations. The President Presi-dent directed Secretary Belknap to send a reply expressing his great re-. re-. gret that he is unable to comply with the request, as tho limited appropriation appropria-tion for the subsistence of the army will not permit it. |
