H is hoped and confidently behoved that a generous t and enlightened public will evince on' i the occasion a proper appreciation of the noble character, and benelicientj purposes, of the institution founded by the ladies of Salt Lake City. Facts in this case are potent arguments. In the Winter of 187-3-7-5 a few patriotic aud public-spirited , ladies, having canvassed tor several weeks the establishment of a free library and reading room, commenced iu earnest the initial nutans for the accomplishment of that object. Subscriptions Sub-scriptions iu cash ajid books were solicited. Somo money and several hundred volumes wcro donated. Suitable apartments were procured, and iu addition to the library, magazines maga-zines and a number ot journals were furnished for tho uso ol visitors. The enterprise was thus tairly launched on ita career of benevolence. The doors of the library rooms were opened, and all who desired to Lpend a pleasant and instructive hour within its walls were cordially welcomed. The benefits of the institution were dispensed without coat or expense ccept to the thunders, and the friends who had generously responded by liberal subscriptions to this earnest appeal. No trace of cxclusiveness or sectarianism marred the enterprise. All classes that visital visit-al the rooms were treated by the lady managers with the same unvarying courtesy. Books were loaned without icnargo to all who desired to read, Kxpcnscs were necessarily incurred. To meet that the ladies ol the association associa-tion have relied solely on monthly contributions from utLdoi-ibers, ami the proceals of lectures which, during dur-ing the pa.it two. Winters, were delivered deliv-ered at Independence Hall and the M. Church. These sources of revenue, rev-enue, without other assistance, aro inadequate lo sustain the institution, in thtj emergency the fair managers have gratefully accepted the prolleral benefit of Saturday evening, and trust that their fellow citizens will respond to the call made on their liberality. Another object has now presented for the indulgent consideration and generous gen-erous support of an enlightened community. com-munity. The diilhsioii of knowledge among I he people, the education oij the yuiith ol our city, the cultivation' ufa'literary taste, and tue establishment establish-ment of a report where strangers may spend an hour pleasantly and inno-ccullv, inno-ccullv, are among the excellent purposes pur-poses which the library can, partially al leat, achieve. It is one of the ettectivc agencies of the mast refined civilization. It is a conservator of morals. It is the friend of the stranger strang-er who sojourns within our gates. Upon the sue-ess of the benefit proposed pro-posed on Saturday will depend the uuestion whether the Ladies Association Associa-tion shah abandon a noble undertaking undertak-ing or pursue their career of usefulness. useful-ness. Under such circumstances, let the good, tho learned and tho philanthropic, philan-thropic, como to the front and make the entertainment a mammoth and substantial benefit. Ciitio. |
