Show THE HISIXG BEXSATIOX. Central L F. Harrison published another an-other card in yesterday njomicgi Tribune, Tri-bune, to which major Woolley responds in tie Herald this morning, ad with thia reply closes his share of the newspaper news-paper controversy. As we remarked, in Junday mornlL's Heraid, we are unable to decide ia this ntatwr where wrong has been done and where blame resu. We have never aspired to Lhe iaculty of pee ring into the heart of a mountain miles away, and saying how 'valuable may be a vein of mineral, or how worthless the alleged, vein, supposed sup-posed to be ia a located claim. And w have jet to meet the "expert," or anybody else, who can de-c de-c are positively what may be the r chneaa, or lack of it, in a partially de ve oped "mine," very far beyond what may be in sight. Wo have conversed , with disinterested gentlemen on the subject, sub-ject, who have visited the Stafford claim, and who believe it may turn out a fair mine, having good indications; but they aj p ar to think :.tkat Trchener and Jones sold the mine for more than it waa worth; and that the assays claimed might have come from it and yet the property not be worth anything like the figure for which it waa stocked. In this there is a large degree of speculation; specula-tion; and the wisest plan certainly would have been to have fairly tested the property before procaeding to extreme lengths- There was a lime in the early development of the Emma when everything every-thing but a stain disappeared, yet Woodman Wood-man followed that, and struck wealth. And, on the other hand, "mines" have been sold that were not worth anything Like the original sum for which they were bonded. But "wild cat," fraud and villainy have not been confined either to Washoe or Utah raining. This matter, it is promised, will come before the courts, when the whole thing may be expected to be thoroughly ventilated. ven-tilated. Meantime, we may say, that Major Woolley has made calm, dispassionate dis-passionate statements, which speak strongly for him. |
