Show Dy W. U. Telegraph. JAlHEfl BROOKS' FCSEBAJ- New York, -1. The funeral services of the late James Brooks took place this afternoon at Graco church, the Kev. Henry C. Potter, D. 1).. assisted by the Rev. Robert Holden, officiating. Kver ainoe its arrival irom Washington the body had lain in state in the right amle of the church, aud during the diy wua viewed by crowds of citizens. The casket containing tho remains was of lua-iHivo rosewood, ornamented with stiver. The floral decorations were beautiful. The church wua crowded. Among those present were representatives representa-tives of all the prominent journals, tho altach.es of the press attended in a body. Several members of cioftreas were preseot, also a delegation from Tammany, the Arcadian club and other organization?. Ry the express desire of the family of tho deceased, all attempt at din piny was omitted. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: pall-bearers: Richard Schell, Cornelius Dubois, Royal PhelpB, Horace F. Claik, Francis Skiddy, John D. Jones, George Opdyke and William Tracy At 2 p.m., the remains were taken to the high altar, when tho Bolemn and impressive service of the Episcopal church, appropriate to the occasion, was performed. No funeral ontion was pronounced. At the conclusion of the service the oasket containing the body was carried down the main aislo and placed in the hearse. The funeral procession then furtned and paused along Broadway to tho Llamiltoo Ferry steamer. In the neighborhood of the church the streets woro lined with spectators. The remains were interred in tho Greenwood oemetery, in tho family vault. |
