Show DIAMONDS AGAIN. The Rocky Mountain ''News," of the 10th inst, records the discovery in the San Juan region, near tort Anglo, in Colorado Territory.of a large number of diamonds ef Brobdignagian proportions. propor-tions. It tells us of one immense gem of 700 carats weight, that was tested and its pureness proved, by Professor Brown, of Harvard university. The professor destroyed the gem in making the test, leaving only a residium of pure carbon or charcoal, "as large as a biscuit," without, however, any giving giv-ing specification as to the size of the biscuit. We are also informed that the decomposition of the diamond was accompanied by brilliant scinctillations of light, dazzling to the professor aod the witnesses of the process. In comparison com-parison with the brilliancy of the expiring ex-piring throes of this diamond, the flashings of a Dnimmond light were tame and dark and gloomy. If such enormously large diamonds of such pure water are found in such ' immenso quantities, to wear them will necewiuto a change of fashions, at least in respect to the shirts we wear. .Nothing but a cheviot, or a "bed tick " shirt would hang one of them Simplo Irish linen bosoms could not stand the strain upon their warp and woof interweaving. The " Newa" EajB : "The value of a nation, untold millions, had disappeared disap-peared from our gaze whila wo drew one breath ; disappeared forever ; aod a piece of worthless charcoal occupied its place!" This terrible destruction of the assessable property of tho United States, was solely the result of the devotion de-votion of the professor to science. The fervor of 6uch ft devotee is eo cool that it would rai.-c the altitude of an icebeix as hiph as ihe summit of the Himalayas. Io company with professor BroWD, is professor Dr. Wallcog.wbo disagrees with his principal as to tho manner of lormatiun of diamonds, attributing their existence to "some sun or planet " The ducttr, also, in his "practical theory" the-ory" as to the geology of tho country, says that "tho vast mem, or table IsdJ, which lies between tbo Kocky -Mountains and tho Colorado canyon, is stwu with the precious stones." We ho(.e be is cotrcct in bis opinion, and that he will unstitch, or unravel, or in some way eitract a few of the gems and forward tbtmato higher price tlun a return of thankp. He speaks of tho region as the "ant-hill country," and ciprcsscs tho opinion that tho larger tho ants, the larger are likely to ho tho diamonds dia-monds brought by them to thl surface j of their hills. This tbcoty is certainly biihly creditable to the imtinot and intelligence of the ants. '. Changing our;tylo of review of this ; rctnirkablc report of our two proles sors, we think it highly probable that ' diamonds do exist in tho region of ; country nfcrred to, wo do not believe 1,1111 anybody cvir salted an area of 3.0UU acres. Tho salting nf tho (nail and poor gems, found on tho bont-I bont-I llarponJing reservation was probably effected in San I'rarxi.-oo and New l ork by the nianager of tbo speculation, specula-tion, in organizing tboir corporation by inning Wl,h them brazilian, South I Alrioan, or othor diamonds. ! |
