Show A SEBIO-COMEDT. ItroTurred thu-: JiHue Clinton wap aea'ed on the bt noh m the police court before which "drunka"are calledupcn to pay for their iorbriatioo, and frail ones are i quired to account fur breaches of the cityordinance enforcing the eighth commandment of the moral code. Aj irysat io dignified silence lsiening to the testimony in a case of alleged Ummv. cohab-, and to the angular an-gular periods of counsel for and apainsL High sounding Dutch in an Anglicised form rolled through the hall, and the gaping assembly had lis tened with mouths distended lest thei? em should miss some of the indecorous indeco-rous tit bitp. The general and the son of ihejudi;e, counsel for the knight of the oleaver, moved for a continuance that other witoesst'B might be procured, and yet there was rea-soo to believe the Slid witnesses had been within hailing distance a thort time previously. The judge who was prosecuting in behalf of the people objected to that continuanoe. With legal eyes he Ecanned the document docu-ment which set forth the grounds on which the continuance was prayed for. The names of the desired witnesses did not appear. He pointed out the omission. omis-sion. He was pointedly eloquent and eloquently pointed on the point. He would oppose that continuance, even till the expiration of Horace Greeley's term of four years in the White House, if those names did not appear. Then up rose the son of a not of a gun, but of a judge that is, he would have risen if he had not been standing; with eyes glistening, nostrils swelling, swell-ing, his giant physique dilating with tho importance of the occasion; and expressed himself in curt rhetoric that he didn't intend giving the names of I the witnesses, for they might be tamp- I ered with. I Now the judge, who is as mild as an j angel one of the winged kind that ' appears on the stage occasionally in I New York or Boston, to whom lager ! beer is the nectar of the gods that hang around the wings this mild-mannered man is sensitive to a degree in fact to several degrees; and looking at his opponent ho thundered out "Do you mean to Eay, sir, that I would tamper with witoessebV" Bang! shot the first; a missile of leaden heavy power a law book. Bang again I And another tome flew barnjlesj-ly at the young, bat devoted de-voted legal crunium. The judicial t-cion announced his intention in-tention to retire from such a scene, and he retired. The "ycneral" announced his intention of retiring from a court that would not protect its dignity. And the court indicated in its blandest ju dicial tones thut they were in a murdering mur-dering hurry and might wait to see if the court wouldn't protect itself. And the court did, to the tune of 25 imposed im-posed as a fine upon the publio prosecutor for contempt. Then came the mcum peccav! Tho belligerents met outside. Said the judicial prosecutor prose-cutor to the son of tho judge, "All right, my boy, you know I didn't mean anything." And the son of the judge responded, "No more did I." General shake hands and return to court. General apology, every fellow apologizing to every other fellow, and the court remitted the fine, arjd the affray af-fray wsb not to appear on record except ex-cept in the confounded newspapers and tho jury looked wise, and tho case waB proceeded with. Pulick Court. Yesterday Phil. Kohleyer was arraigned' for "lewd and lascivious assooiatioo," under the city ordnances, and claimed a jury trial ; General Maswcll and Mr. C. M. Hawlcy for his counsel, and judge Hogo for tho people. Messrs. A. Hopper, Adam Spiers, Jos. Barker, Gcorgo D. Kcatoo, James Paine, and Charles Popper were impaneled as a jury, and tho case was proceeded with. The evidenco, which was somewhat lengthy, but which wo have no intention inten-tion of publishing, went to show that tho alleged crime was committed on tho i!lJih ult., and that the other offending party was a woman of the town who has been repeatedly before the police court. The case was given to ihe jury in the evening, and after some deliberation a sealed verdict was returned to bo opened this morning at 10 o'clock. |
