Show THE MRS. BOW EB SUICIDE At abont half-past ni-" vtTday moruitg coroner H. S. 1!- ie, t-urn-moned a jury at the residence of Mr. W. T. Bower, to enquire into the case of alleged poison of Mrs. Jennie E. Bower, reported in yesterday's Hlr-ald. Hlr-ald. The subjoined evidence will give the ficts elicited: The first testimony given was that of Miss Emma Bower, adopted daughter daugh-ter of the deceased, and some seven or eight years of age. In reply to questions ques-tions Miss Emma said: I goc the laudanum laud-anum down at the co-operative drug store. Mother sent me for it. I went down after dinner. 1 went where the post office used to be. I got three bottles. I went to three different places. Mother sent mo to three different dif-ferent places. I took no paper, no order. I told them I wanted some laudanum. I got this bottle (referring to the bottle before the jur, havmg the label of O. E. Perkins). I scraped off one label with a knile, and threw it out of doors. Mrs. H. Meyers was then sworn and testified: I came in and found Mrs. Bower very sick. Didn't know what was the matter. I washed her with cold water- It was about 6 p.m. The servant girl called me into the yard. She told me Mrs. Bower had taken poison. Girl called me from supper. Said Mrs. Bower was very sick. I found she couldn't speak or opeu her eyes. I mixed some muotardaud water in a tumbler and gave her. I also gave her a little warm water, nothiDK more. It had no effect. I then sent for a physician. I staid till fuur tbw morning. She died about twenty minutes of one. I saw this bottle (the one with the Perkins' label). It was picked up by the lit le girl (Mis Emma Bower). Miss Tina Hanson, servant girl, sworn. I am sixteen years old. Mrs. : Bower about sundown, or a little bo- j fore, sent Emma ( her daiitfhtnrl tn thr : drug store. She told her to get some laudanum. I don't know where. She only told her to go and get it. She afterwards told her to go and get another and take the label off, not to go to the same place. I saw her driuk the contents. It was before dark. I asked her what it was. She said it would do her face good, would cure the chapping, would make her sleep. She eat nothiog all day, no breakfast; said her head aohed all day. I saw her drink the contents of the second bottle. I saw Emma take off the label. la-bel. 1 never was sent for anything of the kind before. She seemed to be all right, but kind of sorry. Mrs. Bower told me to watch for captain Goodspeed, to be sure and get him that Dight, it would be too late tomorrow- I never saw her take anything any-thing of the kind before. I have been witb her five or six mouths. Ohe was sitting on the bed when she took it. She took somo water afterwards. I handed it to her. She laid down then. It was just beforo dark. She told me not to look at her, it was none of my business. 1 threw one bottle in the yard, Mrs. Isabella Bray, sworn; About six-fifteen p.m. the servant Rirl ran in crying and said Mrs. Bower was dying. I said nonsense, she is only a little siok; and I then went in. I saw Bhe was suffering from the effects of an opiate. I asked Mr. Bower and Mrs. Myers what she had been taking. She had a vhl in her hand when Mr, Woodhull caute in. Mr. W. threw it under the bed. 1 aked to see the bottle. It was square. It had no smell. ( Phis was a bottle supposed suppos-ed to have had chloroform in. Re- j porter.) I put the bottle on the bu- j reau. I told the prl to get the while , of an egg. Mrs, Bower resisted some ' and tried to say no. I forced her to I take it. J h.eld her nose. It bad no effect and I got another nd mixed it with sweet oil. I told Mr. Bower ahe must have a physician. Mr. Bower said Bhe was in tho habit of taking it. I told him to go and get the first phy-siciHn phy-siciHn he oouid. He said ho had sent for Dr. Hamilton. I told Mr. Myers not to wait for Dr. Hamilton; to get the first physician ho could. lie brought a physician. Two came, Dr. Ihompson and Dr. Williamson. Dr. Thompson took an active part. The other looked on. The doctor got her up from the bed. Ho asked what had been given. I told him. I staid with her till she died. I did not see her tuko anything, but was satisfied eho had taken something. When I came she was in convulsions. Sho died in a stupor. I couldn't rouse her. I iked her if ghn could talk. Sho made an indistinct souud. Sho opened her eyes once or twice as if oonseious. She couldn't converse. A gentlemau brought me a powder marked "emetic," "eme-tic," from Mr. Woodhull, which I gave her. Dr. John Deardon Bush, sworn : I practice medicine in Salt Lake. I was called in to see Mrs. Bower about eleven p.m. I found her in bed under tho intluenoe of somo narcotic poison. By what I learned from tho attendants and Dr. Thompson I arrived at the uonolusion that Bhe had taken a preparation pre-paration of opium. Although she whs in an almost helpless coudition I took the best means to counteract the effects. I did everything that could bo done, but she was h.ipelesa when I was called in. I stayed about an hour and a hslfi I iojecied stimulants under her skio. She improved a little in a short time, and nearly spoko. but then Buuk. The contraction of her eye wa owing to the belladonna given her by Dr.Thomp-son. Dr.Thomp-son. She evidently died from the effects ef-fects of opium poison. Such were the symptoms. Mrs. S. F. Lovcll, sworn: Betwecu eight and nine p.m. I came in. I was called and assisted in battling her with cold water, etc. 1 saw uo bottler, The servant girl said she had handed her two bottles. X found her hands black. I stayed ono or two hours. I wont homo and told my husband. Her hands were black and her feet cold. I re ! turned and found them about to use tho stomach pump. I didn't stay, I1 called about ou3 a. cl and was told she -?2?dcad, Mr. H. Myers, ono of the juror?, ! then testified. Toward night my wife ; came in and told me that Mm. Bower's 1 servant girl had told her Mrs. Bower ! had taken poison. She showed me ; a bottle. The girl paid keep it secret. , I told my wife to go right in to Mr. j Bower and tell him, so he would know : what to do. I and my wife then went into tho room and I showed Mr. Bower this bottle (the Perkins bottle). I asked Mr. Bower how she was. He said sho would be all right in a few minutes, it was about dusk. I went to my shop and right back. I found Mrs. Bray, Mr. Bower, and Dr. Wil liamson, trying to rouo Mrs. bfjwer. They couldn't. Mrs, Bray told me to bring the first physician I could liod. I got Dr. Thompson at once, i told him the trouble. The doctor soot for a stomach pump, 1 went and got it. I met Dr. Thompson going home. He said ihe wouid die before morning. I could n't say what was doni; i went home; was worn out. 1 saw one bottle, a sqnare one, about an ounce bottle. Mr. Bower said she had this bottle in her hand at her mouth. Dr. Thompson said he had no doubt but that Mrs. Bower died from poison, from laudanum. hen he ws cail d tho pupils of her eyes were contracted, lie taw she must die from her condition. condi-tion.
