Best testified to being, on the day of tho fire, ordered to turn on steam as the ship was on fire and af terwards to stop tbe engine and Btart the donkey pump. Tne donkey pump 60on stopped, and the smoke then densely coming through the bulkheads, tho other pumps were then manned. Tbero was no tire yot found. The boilers eondurJting tho steam pipes on tho "Bienville" . were two inches fire extinguishing pipes. I They should be four or six ioohca. He j was told by the quartermaster that the fire came from the hatch under steerage steer-age fifteen. The forward boilers of the "Bienville" had as much security against firo as those of any vessel he ever saw. The witness thought tbe firo originated io forward between dcoks. The witness had twenty people in his boat, nine of whom were drowned by tho boat's capsizing. John H. MoCurdy, who built the boilers for tho "Bienville," testified that the boilers were better as to safety against fire than any others ho had seen. Tho case wis then adjourned until tomorrow. |
