Show FORTY-THIRD ANNUAL CONFERENCE. CON-FERENCE. The Forly-lhird annual Conference of tho Church of Jesm Christ of Latter-day Saints commenced on Sur. day morning, April Gth, at 10 ?.w., in tho new tabcrnae'e in this oiry, purtu-ant purtu-ant to adjournment lat October. There were upon the ftand, Presidents Presi-dents B. Youd and D. H. Wells, of tho F.rst Presidency; Elders Orson Hyde, Orson Pratt, Juhn Taylor, Wi!-ford Wi!-ford Woodruff, George Q. Cannon, Brilnm Young, juo., and Joseph F. Smith, of tho Twelvo Apostles; Julm Smith, Patriarch; Joseph Young, Al bcrt P. Rockwood, H'raco S. KIdrcdge and John Vaa Cott, of the First Seven PrewidentH of tho Seventies; Seven-ties; Kiias riuilh, Edward fene'grove and Elias Morris, the presidency of the High Piieats Quorum; George B. Wallace Wal-lace and John T. Caioe, of the presidency presi-dency of this stako of Zion; Edward Iunter, Leonard W. Hardy and Jetse 0. Little, the prcrideney of the Binhoprio. There were ateo a Urgo numher of birthops, presiding ciders and influential influen-tial gontlemon present from tho different differ-ent parts of the Territory. The choir, under the leadership of Prof. George Careless, comprised the regular tabernacle choir and a large number of vocalists from different parts of the Territory. Conference was called to order by President Brigham Young. Choir sang "Great God attend while Zion sings, eto ;" prayer by Elder Brigham Young, junr.; singing by the choir, "VVc'ro not ashamed to own our Lord, etc." Elder George Goddard was eleoted clerk of conlbrcnce. Elder John Taylor doliverod an interesting discourse on the dispenna tion of tho fullness of times; treating of tho blessings to be derived from obeying the commandments of God as given through His servants; and touched upon tho great amount of good that was being accomplished by this people, and their endeavors to introduce in-troduce iuto the world correot prin ciplcs in morality, religion and politics; comparing tho morals of the people ot Utah with those of the other portions of the world. Elder Geo. Q. Cannon followed, on tho fulfillment of prophecy; showing the progross of tbo church since its organization. Ho exhorted the people to obey the ooudkjIs that were given by those who were placed over them; and admonished them to leave old traditions behind them, and put on the now life in Christ. He spuko of tho good that tho Saints havo accomplished accom-plished in all places where they had been, and of the prBsoot prosperity of Utah, compared with o:her parts of the oimulry in which they had resided and from which they had been driver. Choir sang an anthem; benediction by Joseph F. Smith. Conference ndjourocd to 2 p.m. 2 p m. When the meeting was called to , order there inuat have been nearly ten thousand persons present, the number being largely increased during tho next fifteon minutes-Singing minutes-Singing by tho choir, '"What wondrous won-drous things, etc.;" prayer by elder VV. Woodruff; singing, 'We'li sing all hail to Jesus' name." President B. Young addressed the congregation, delivering a fr.therly and insiruciivo discourse. Taking up tho phraso "our enemies," and tho cry raised by many that the Mormons aro ; their enemies, he icquirad who were the enemies of this people and to whom were they enemies; answering the question in these words: "Ho who promotes pro-motes peace is the friend of mankind; man-kind; he who stirs up strife is tho enemy of mankind." After dwelling on this subjeot, ho rebuked those of the Saints who were turning after the things of tho world and neglecting the things of God; deprecating the folly and vanity that toads women to follow alter overy fashion that might be invented. in-vented. Those who follow after Babylon Baby-lon will not receive the blessings God has prepared for the faithful; aud in this connection ho said: "If these ruy brethren and Bisters do not walk up to the light and blessings of tho holy gospel, they will be removed, and others will be called to occupy , their places." He urged tho people to servo God ciligently. If they sought riches this was tho way to obtain them and of a permanent oharactcr, for God is the possessor of all things and will bestow them upon His Saints The choir sung an anthem; benediction benedic-tion by elder H. S. Eldrcdge. Conference adjourned till Monday morning at 10 o'clock. |
