Show GENERAL. Promotion of Female Officials. Washinton, 15. In the office of the Fifth Auditor Mrs. Helen Goodwin, of New York, Mrs. Susan 0. 8ullivan, l of Mass., and Miss J. Jennings, of Wisconsin, have been promoted from copyists to first class clerkships. They passed the same examination imposed ! on the mala clerks of that grade. The Colored Cadet's Case. The finding of tho general court-martial in the case of the colored cadet, rimitb, of West Point, was his dismissal dismis-sal from tho Academy. Tbe Secretary of War, in an order just issued, says tbe proceedings, findings and sentence are approved; but in view of all the circumstances surrounding tho case, and believing that tbe ends of public justice will be better observed, and the policy of the government of which the presence of this cadet in the military Academy is a signal illustration, will be better maintained by a commutation of the sentence than by its rigid enforcement, en-forcement, the President is pleased to miiigate it; by substituting for dismissal dis-missal from tbe service of the United States a reduction in bis academic standing of one year. A dispatch from Ottawa says, recent advices from Newfoundland give particulars par-ticulars of tho reception of the Treaty of Washington iu one of the provinces most interested in the question. The people of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Bruns-wick, and it was expected those of Newfoundland New-foundland would be wholly with them in opposition to the Treaty, manifest a contrary sentiment. That colony of fishermen appears to be entiiely in tiivor of ratification. The Late Fishing Dlaniter. The loss of a fishing schooner with forty persons, on the coast of Newfoundland, New-foundland, was reported last week; and later accounts of this icrriblo disaster announce that two women, named Mary McGratb and Mrs. Lilburn, left St. Johns as passengers aboard the ill-fated schooner. All but one of those who are missing, or drowned, leave wives and families behind, who were dependent on them for means to live through the long and profitless winter of Newfoundland. Crime In Chicago. Chicugo, 15. Mrs. Sarah May, a rcspcctablo young married woman, whose husband recently left her, died yesterday morning under circumstances which lead to the suspicion that her husband had poisoned her. She had shortly before her death had a stormy interview with him, during which, at her request, be brought her a drink ol water. Immediaiely after drinking she was taken violently ill and, died io a few hours.
