Show U. S. KXPLOKINO EXPEDITION. A portion of tho Wheeler exploring ; part', cn route for Arizona, passed throuL'h our Greets this morning and encamped at the Summit. This detachment de-tachment is in command of Surgeon Cochrane, and proceeds from here to Belmont where it joins the main divi cion under Lt. G. M. Wheeler of the corps of engineer?. It ia expected that they will remain several days with us, and the geilo-P'sts geilo-P'sts of the party, Messrs. Gilbert and Smith, will tako a look at the Austin mines. A good many citizens will bo interested inter-ested to learn that the curious one- wheeled vehicle that accompanies tbe train is an odometer and is used tc measure the distances traversed. The party here includes eight civilian assistants topographers, geologists, etc. seven packers aod an escort ol seventeen soldiers, with a pack train ot forty mules. The work ihey have before be-fore them is to surrey and map ihe unexplored un-explored portions of southern Nevada and northern Arizona. To accomplish this the latitude and longitude ot prominent promi-nent points will be determined by thorough thor-ough astronomical observations,and the intervals surveyed by experienced topographers. to-pographers. A portion of the expedition expe-dition will traverse Death Valley, aod a water party will explore the grat canon of the Colorado, traveling lrom Mohave upward instead of floating with the current as has been done b some adventurous voyagers. Full attention at-tention will be given to the mineral resources of ihe country explored and the report that will be rendered cannot fail to be of great interest. Mr. O'Sullivan, well known to many of our citizens, a first-class photo grapher and one of large experience in the army and in provioua exploring parties, is wilh the main division, now at Lureka, and will accompany the expedition to Arizona to bring back views ot the unrivalled Colorado teen ery, now known to the world only from sketches and descriptions. Lieut. W heeler is already well known as an energetic exploror, and is ably seconded at every point. Hi-outfit Hi-outfit provides for every contingency, aod is by liir the best that has ever been prepared ibr the exploration ot tbe inhospitable country he ititends to examine.
