Show ELECTIONS. Tho Texas election commenced on tho Jrd, and was to continue four dayp. Wonderful precautions were taken to have it go particularly onesided, curiously curi-ously illustrative of tho manner in which republicanism has coma to bo eontriicd by sonic men in authority. Political meetings wero expressly prohibited pro-hibited during I ho election by procio. mation of the governor of tho State, and all evidences of feeling with regard to certain candidates such as shouting or hurrahing for them was forbidden in tho neighborhood of the polls. This sounds very like aa if the election had been held in Franco under despotic rule, or in some of the most illiberal of Kuropcnn monarchies, and would give an English man good reasons lor asking where was (he liberty in that "blarslcd country." We may learn the result of the election some time when those having the cooking of the count choose to give their remits to the public. The Ohio election is held to-duy. Three tickets are in the field those of tho Republican, Democratic and Temperance Tem-perance parties. As news of this election, elec-tion, winch is watched with much interest in-terest by the public, will soon bo made known by telegraph, there is no need to speculate on it. Philadelphia also has an election today to-day for city ollieera, two Slate senators and eighteen members of tho lower house of the Slate legislature. A stroDg effort will likely bo made by the Kepublicaus to recover Philadelphia from the Democratic rule which has governed it since 1S0S. Tho courso which Pennsylvania may take in tho Presidential election next year is conceded con-ceded to bo of paramount interest, and every indication which may point to it will be eagerly waited for. |
