Bartlett retires from the editorship editor-ship of the Overland; his successor is not named, but it will probably be Frank Soule. Officer Duulcavy who was stabbed iu the back by a drunken ruffian whom he was bringing' in from the Barbary Coast last night, is in a comfortable condition and will probably recover. OHEGOS. Portland, 16. The steamer Idaho sails this evening with ninety passengers, passen-gers, including Hon. F. B. Brunot and party of Indian commissioners who have just returned from the Grand Rondc reservation. They found the Indians there thrifty and industrous. The land has becu surveyed and will soon be alloted. Grading and laying track ou 40th St., is nearly completed. The locomotive locomo-tive "James C. Couch" passed up the street to-day. The Portland Steamer and Railroad Co., with a capital of $200,000, and the Oregon Transfer Co., with a capital ofj s2U0,O0O filed articles of incorporation1 this week. Nl AiA. Carson, 17. There was a break at the Novada State prison at half past six o'clock this evening, and five of the guards were overcome. Mat.C. Pixley, proprietor of the Warm Springs Hotel, was killed; and twenty-nine prisoners escaped. Lieut. Gov. Denver was wounded, but not seriously. Robert Dedmnn, sentenced for life, did good service in assisting the officers and the guard s to hold the prison. Troops from Virginia aud the otlicers here are in hot pursuit of the escaped convicts. ARIZONA. Los Angeles, 17. The Arisona Miner, of Sept. lJ, has the following : General Crook is at bWt Whipple, quite sanguine of his ability to clean out the Apaches and reduce them to submission. Uo has made a treaty with Maguiles, chief of a band of Coyotros, who is the only faithful, honest and friendly chief in the whole Apache nation. Maguilcs and his warriors will co-operate with the whites in their war in t ho Apache country. The Las Cruees Bvnhnr says the Apaches who have come in on the reservation, we presume at Canadi Almose, have reported the death of the great chief, Cochize, from wounds received in a fight in Sonora. The report is not fully credited. Vincent Collyer arrived at Fort Craig, New Mexico, August 123d, on his way to Camp Grant, Arizona. On Thursday of last week the Indians made a raid iu Pine Flat, stole eight horses and ran into the mountaius. Next day a party of miners discovered eleven Indians with-I with-I in a short distauee, killed one, wounded I two and captured their luggage and a ! fjuautity of mescal. Dogler, a barber on Kearney street, is being tried this morning in the municipal court on an indictment as accessory to a burglary, the burglars having cut through the wall from his shop into a pawn-broker's shop and nearly murdered mur-dered the proprietor in November last. One of the burglars is already in San Quintin. The consular llag are displayed today to-day iu honor of the anniversary of Chilian independence. Wheat is selling from 62.00 to $2.7o, with a general disposition to invest iu the lower grades and ignore the higher ones altogether. Dogler, the barber, was convicted, the jury being out only five minutes. It is reported that Byrne, the present district attorney, will resign and allow his successor, Mr. Murphy, to be appointed ap-pointed immediately, he being broken down in health and desirous of travel ing to Europe. 1 Some weeks ago a mau name John-1 son, from the east, having a large sum in greenbacks to loan, was induced to advance ten thousand five hundred dollars on supposed diamonds and jewelry which did not turn out to bo of the value represented, and he brought suit to recover the money to-day. His landlady sues him for breach of promise, and it is said that an offer is made to him to compromise by both parties discontinuing their suits. |
