Show SELECTED. MURDER REDUCED TO.FIGURES. We find in a late issue of the Boston AJi-crtier an iQiereiting compilation of tlie statistics oi homicide in tkis TOuntry for a period of one year previous pre-vious to the taking of the lat census. The Eubject being highly important, though not altogether agreeable, we present a few of the figures in this account ac-count of blood. In the twelve months alluded to there were, in the whole county, ,0oG homicides l,SuS of these occurring in the States and 2V2 in the Temiories. Of the victims, 151 were females, and of that number 146 were from the States. The Indians are credited with killing 105 persons, 1- of whom were fromlhe Territories and 43 from the States. Nevada, though one of the most thinly setticd State?, is decidedly unhealthy to live in, one in every 2, wO population meeting a violent death during the year in question. California Califor-nia killed one in every 12,000, and the average of the three I'ticiiic States as one in every 10,000. Going now to the other extreme of the continent, we find that Is'ew Hampshire and Vermont Ver-mont show but one homicide in every .;oO,UUU of population; Maine and C oncecticut, one in every 0,000; Massachusetts, one to every 60,000, and .Rhode Inland one to every 43,000. The sis New England States together present only 43 murders to more than 3,500,000 people, or one to every S3,00U. In the Middle States, New York had one homicide to every 02,000 people; peo-ple; New Jersey one to every SI, 000; Pennsylvania, one to 60,000; Delaware, one to' 31 ,000; Maryland, one to 39,000; Ohio, one to 43,000. Ihe Northwest presents nearly ttic same genera! average. Illinois has one to 45.0U0; Indiana, one to 50,000; Iowa, one to 49,000; Michigan, one to Iu7,u00; Minnesota, one lo SS,-000 SS,-000 ; Wisconsin, one to 06,000; Nebraska, one to 13,000 : Kansas, Kan-sas, one to 8,000. Michigan is the freest from homicide of any of the great States, and Nebraska, which looks badly on paper, had only nine murders in all, seven of which were by Indians. Ten of the Kansas victims were also furnished by the Indians, so that making a fair allowance the proportion pro-portion in the Northwestern States stands about one lo every 60,000. In the old border States, Virginia has one homicide to every 17,000 population; pop-ulation; West Virginia, one to every 40,000; Kentucky, one to IS, 000; Tennessee, Ten-nessee, one to 11,000; Missouri, one to 18,000. Tho average of these five States is one to 10,000, or thereabouts. The Southern States, owing to the sweet inllucnces of reconstruction, and the loving kinduess of carpet-bagger.-and black vagabonds, have a dark record. North Carolina has ouc homicide hom-icide to every 22,000 population; Soul! Carolina, one to 10,000; Georgia, one to 10,000; Florida, one to 4,000; Ala bama, one to 10,000; Mississippi, one to 9,000; Louisiana, one to 0.0UO; Arkansas, Ar-kansas, one to 6,300; Texas, one to 2,500. The average of these nine States is one to 7,300 which shows that had the entire Union been reconstructed recon-structed on the Southern plan, there would have been not less than 40,000 murders in ihe year instead of 2,030.
