Show Al'OIOCiV TO Dll. NKWiMAN. Wc owe an apology to the Rev. J. P. Ncwtnan. W'i hasten to make that apology. Wo trust that the ' learned and pious doctor will tonoider ! it made. And we are driven to this : by the fact that we have been laboring under a delusion in reference to his reverence. We thought that he was a preacher in the Methodist church, and as such we were disposed to hold him to a strict account. We were in error. From a programme now before us we learn that he is pastor of the Meiropol- i it an Memorial Mcthodi.-t Kpicopal I church. Now that is not a Mcthodiat j church. What it is we do not know, but it is not Methodist It is Memorial, ( whatever that means; it is Metropoli- tin, whatever that mean?; and it is ! Methodist Episcopal in addition. Now wc recognize the right of any congregation congre-gation to organize and worship in its own way. In this the Rev. Newman dirTers from ns. He wii! not rannit the Almighty to be wor.-hipped by the Mormons. The Rev. Newman in t,o j many words says to the Lord, " Thoe Mormons shall not worship at all, and I to secure that I instigate the government govern-ment 10 open the penitentiary and , punish with stone-breaking any polyg- amous follower of Brisham Young who 1 dares to wor?hip the Lord without my ! consent." And this although the poor ' mignided Mormon may be as sincere ! as the Rev. Newman. ll'i-At 1 Capital. |
