Show U. S. Geological Surveying Party. Wo had a pleasant call yes-1 terday from Prof. F. V. Ilayden, the chief of tho United States Geological surveying party now organizing for an exploration of the northern Territories. The party are encamped at Ogden, which they make the base of their operations, and while waiting the completion com-pletion of their outfit are taking ob-. serrations, photographs, sketches, etc. The party remain several days in their present camp and then proceed to Virginia Vir-ginia City, Montana, by way of Cache Valley, and thence to the Yellowstone country. The names of the party are : Prof. F. V. Hayden, U. S. Geologist, chief of the expedition; Mr. J. Stevens, chief assistant and general manager; Prof Cyrus Thomas, agricultural statistician sta-tistician and entomologist; .Mr. Henry W. Elliott, artist; Mr. Wm. H. Jack-son, Jack-son, photographer; Mr. Geo. B. Dixon, assistant photographer; Dr. Cbas. S. Turnbull, physician and surgeon; Prof. Geo. N. Allen, assiatant geologist and botanist; Mr. R. Adams, assistant botanist; Mr. A. Schonbern, topographical topo-graphical engineer; Mr. J. W. Bea-man, Bea-man, assistant topographer; Mr. A. F. Smith, ditto; Prof. 0. Carrington, ichthyologist; ich-thyologist; Mr. Chester M. Dawes, asst. do.;- Dr. A. C. Peal, miueralo-gist;'Mr. miueralo-gist;'Mr. F. J. Huso, ornithologist; Mr. Wm. B. Logan, Secretary; Mr. Clifford De Vere Nigtey, cotichologist. Mr. J. Wilson Duncan, naturalist; Mr. Stephen fiovey, wagon master, and several teamsters, cooks and other employees. em-ployees. Prof. Hayden is looking exceedingly well, and anticipates a fine Summer's work, the result of which cannot but prove highly beneficial to the whole , country, as very little is known in a scientific point of view of the region' over which - their explorations will ex- tend. Several of the party were in town yesterday whose names will be found among the guests at the Townscnd 1 House. ' |
