Tho practice of closing stores and business places generally, on election day, having resulted in a general stampede of clerks and employes to the Cliff House and elsewhere; the supporters of the Republican and Tax Payers tickets, will to-morrow continue con-tinue busiuess the same as usual, giving giv-ing only an hour for employes to vote. There was quite a spirit in the grain market to-day. Speculators are coming com-ing in again and advancing prices while shippers and millers generally draw out. Two dollars and fifty cents to $'2.G2J is being paid for good to choice, and $2.65 is demanded for fancy lots, though no sales are reported at the latter figure as yet. There are apparently ten times as many black mailing strikers following candidates for a price this election as ever were seen before, the side-walks in the vicinity oi California and Montgomery Mont-gomery streets are blocked with thero, and they swarm like flies, around the business offices of all the candidates on all the tickets. The stock market was tolerably firm but quiet this afternoon; being visibly alfected by the election excitement. lucre is hardly any betting going on. Pachcco, f. There was a large lire here this morning at about 4 o'clock. Hooks storo and warehouse were burned. Loss 18,000, insured $7,-000, $7,-000, also Banker it Porter's, loss $2,-000, $2,-000, no insurance; Morrinos, sadler, losa $2,000, insurance 1,000; Odd Fcllows'Hall, loss So, 000, insured 000; L. Anderson, loss $o00; and J. H, Troy, $500, no insurance. A great deal of other damage was done. Tho fire was caused by an incendiary-. Stockton, 5. The Republicans held a large meeting at their wigwam tonight. to-night. Torchlight processions arc parading the streets. To-morrow promises to be a more exciting election than has over been held in this city and county. Laura 1). Forco Gordon addresses a Fair crowd at tho Agricultural Fair Pavillion to-night. The enthusiasm on woman's rights seems to have considerably con-siderably abated here. Grass Valley, 5. An immense Republican Re-publican meeting here to-night, wa? addressed by A. A. Sargent, 11. The Democrats aro also holding a meeting, which is addressed by Watt, Dibblo and others, there is a small crowd, probably 400. Tho Democrats are down iu the mouth in Nevada county which is good for 400 majority fbr Booth. NEVADA. Reno, 5. A young man picked up a bottlo of strychnine on tho spot where tho body of J. Honey was found, last week, and it is supposed; that Mr. Honey had committed sui cide. . . Considerable betting is going on here in regard to the issue of the Califon nia election to-morrow. Monterey, 5. Martin Herds was assassinated last night. lie . was stabbed in five places, several times in tho back. The cutting is supposed to have been done by James Rush top and Charlotte Vasquez, who are in jail. A coroner's inquest and post mortem was held by Coroner Pardee to-day, and the jury found a verdict against Rub-ton Rub-ton and Vasquez. Some time ago he and the others had a difficulty in San Luis Osbispo with Rushton, in which the latter was badly shot. The affray lat niht wns but a sequel to that occurrence. The murder was brutal and cowardly. A feeling of indignation indigna-tion at the occurrence prevails throughout through-out the whole community. He is said to have committed many acts of out-' out-' iawry in the southern parts of the , State, and was looked upon as a dangerous dan-gerous man, but at tho time of his ( murder was in town t-n private busi-' busi-' ncss and was conducting himself quietly.
