Show TUB BAXK ROBBER. j We have already referred to the j arrest of William S. Iline for the robbery of the Great Barrington bank, lie yesterday made the following statement: state-ment: "I was iu the Barrington bank over three jears. The first two years I kept mighty straight, but at the end of that I pot in ivith a set of younii fellows, and they were of that class that spent money freely. In time I went on a heavy "spree," and was called up by the President. IJc then told rue that if I ever made a mistake again, I should be discharged. This cooled me down, and for a year all went well with me. Last October I got in with the "boys" again and went off on another "sprc." On Friday, the 20th of October, Oc-tober, the cashier informed me that when the president returned, he would report President Dodge was absent, and I knew that when lie returned all would be over with me and 1 would loose my character. A month or so before, I had an offer from another bank of a position at $401) per month, and I knew that this would ruin my chauce of getting it. I sat down, considered con-sidered tbo whole matter, and determined deter-mined on tho course 1 would take. The president was to return on Monday, Mon-day, the 2IJd of October, and my work had to be done quickly. Knew the combination that would open the safe, nud on Saturday night I went to the bank, opened the safe, mid cleared it of all available moans. It being Saturday Satur-day evening X knew that the bank would not be open until Monday morning, morn-ing, and I made the most of my time. I was not as smart as I mighthavc been, and here I am. I have no fear of the future, as my relatives are rich and influential enough to settle my case, but I am sensitive regarding the loss of my character." Ex. |
