That lie .should k i:a.t ;ind pay President Grant a visit while there in nut nti-iii'i-; nor Would it ! Liu -o vt'ry wonderful if he should ci-j preen hi.i opinion rolativft to curtain' Kravc charges preferred uj.-uiiift Chief j J tint ice Mclveuiiaiid Judc Strickland; but that In; should aWend from hib position as Governor of the Territory and of all tho people theTerri lory, d rap his official rubo in the mire of petty political intrigues, and f-toop to the depredation of unjustly villif'yingl tho people who.-e Governor ho has been appointed, we cannot for a moment believe. We have h:id it from gentlemen who havo been intimate inti-mate with Governor Woods for years, j that he is a high-minded, honorable' man ineapablo of the contemptible tricks and hlippery ninucHities to which I petty and intriguing politicians report. The would-be wine-acre of the telegraph I department, auti'-unces that Governor1 Woods declared the charges against the Judges were untrue, and thut they were "mudo in tho interests of the Moiuious and certain parties engaged in mining operations who cannot use these Judges as they desire." This is so manifestly tho same fulse statement thut has been assiduously thrown out by certain parties here, that wo are compelled to believe it has been telegraphed liotu this city, and sent back as having been uttered by Governor Gov-ernor Woods. We will not think that ho could so maliciously malign the people of Utah, who if they had sought the removal of the Judges named would havo preferred other charges against them: and in tho bo. lief that tho present Governor of this Territory is himself maligned by this telegraphist, wc are strength ened by tho following dispatch from this city, published in tho Albany Evening Times of thcUord, and headod "An Assault on Mormondom:" Salt Lake Citv, Thursday, Juuo2l POLITICAL PLOT AGAINST MORMON PROSPERITY Great excitement is felt here, owiu? to t he efforts of California and Nevada capi'nlists to effect the removal of the judiciary and other United Statt s ofla cials from t'io city. TUB MORMON PAPERS ARE INTENSELY WROCOI1T UP over the prospect, and the California and Nevada ring are confident. Seniors Sen-iors Nyo and Stewart are the attorneys for tho combination. THOMAS FITCH TALKED OK FOR CHIEF JUSTICE by the rings. Active defence will be made. rVsideut Grant will have all the documents iu a day or fvo. The campaign will be bitter and sharp. A mili on in money and vast political interests in-terests arc involved. President Grant's decision is anxiously awaited by all the people of Utah. There will be trouble here if the incursionists carry the position. posi-tion. The absurdity of the Mormon papers being "intensely wrought up" about tho matter must be patent to all who know the situation; while we have no doubt that Mr. Fitch, or any other legal gentleman of ability, would respectfully re-spectfully decline tho Chief Justiceship, Justice-ship, even with double its present salary. sal-ary. But the object of these telegrams is very obvious. Whatever justice there may bo iu the charges made against 1 the Judges must be smothered, if possible, pos-sible, by raising the wail of LlThe Mormons! Mor-mons! The Mormons are in it! The Mormons are doing itl" So that attention at-tention may be directed from the real point at issue, over this other and stale assumption, that the Mormons are working for the accomplishment of some unseen purpose. And the effort is evidently to implicate Governor Woods as an enemy to the people, who would be at the trouble, as the tool of a clique, to go to Washington for the purpose of maligning and slaudering the people of a Territory of which hits hi-ts the Governor. We again express our incapacity of believing that he could descend so low, aud our couvio tiou that he has himself been grossly maligned. As to the real isciue involved in this nucstion of the removal of the Judges, the Mormons have yet to express an opinion on it. Thty are not in the " tight, and have no interest in it, fur ther than a desire to see right pre vat at all times. |
