Show MINISTER DE LONG AND THE EMBASSY. The stay of Hon. Chas, E. DeLong and the Japanese Embassy in this city, from the tenor of the information this morning, is likely now to be very brief. Their visit hero has been an exceedingly exceed-ingly gratifying one in many respects, and will bo long rcmenibcred with pleasure by our citizens. It seems a pity that reminiscences of such occasions occa-sions are so often marred by something unpleasant, some little act on the part of oue or more which like a noisome weed springing-up in a beautiful flower garden poisons the fragrant odors and mars the beauty of the spat. Wo regret that Minister IVLoag should have been made the subject of any petty annoyance while here, but there are persons who would if possible fling tho apple of discord into paradise, and plague equanimity itself with their petty spleen. A telegram was sent from this city last Friday which we called attention to a few days ago endeavoring to create a prejudice against our Minister to Japan lxv;u;c of his visit to President Young, and statin. that certain names lu I been i withdrawn from the signers to the bauquet last Monday night as a consequence conse-quence of that visit. How much the failure of the.-c signers to receive invitations invi-tations to tho banquet of Friday night, tendered by the Kiulxy to representative represent-ative geutlemen, had to do w;ui the matter of this press dispatch- the rublie may jude for themselves. Hut followinc it went ao-her. stating that Mi::i-tcr V:l.o::; Lad "explained" "ex-plained" the mailer, by intimating that he was taken to President Young's residence without knowing where he wi going. This, like the previous dispatch, was an ab.-urdtty, a piece of contemptible sn.'lbeiy, and without foundation in fact. hat has niiiii.-tcr IVl.'.Tg to do .with the petty local d i : 1 e r c n ce s of Salt Like, that he sb.tjuid be ud by a few individuals to subserve their hale j-eheaie?? And what has he ever dne that he thouid thus be presented to th j country in so , absurd a light? That the withdrawicc signers de.-ircd to again get their names tacked on to Monday n:ght's tacq'jet list, and succeeded, and had this tele- j gram sent to cover the results of their . own miserable pique and spleen, may ' account for the dispatch but on- makes ' it the more glaring. The correct cess I of thLi may be inferred, as we have! I good authority for sant' that Mr. Ue-, Ling Ljale no s.uch "apol- gy" aj he is credited with; nor could any sen-' I bie person think for a iaon:';m that he Wiald. I lint this cannot touch a man of Mini.-ter i reputation and high po-ition. The country know him, ' and honor him, and will continue tO honor him. And he with hisestim-i able lady and the Kmba.-y, will leave, i;.d I Lake all Uaring the warmest regards re-gards and best wi.-hes of every persou who-io good opinion is worth having. |
