Show Dr. Newman. This preaching politician pol-itician seems to be catching it all around. The New York Independent, which has had the reputation of keeping keep-ing a Methodist editor, thus expresses itself in plain terinn about the political huckster: Dr. Newimtn aa a citizen has h perfect per-fect right to pull wires for Mr, Ilailan, against whom we have nothing to object. ob-ject. But this sort of attempt to use the Methodist church as a machine iu a political con tost is an inipcrtiuenco that every Methodist ought to resent. And wo havo heard ot' a similar plan for using Methodist influence in the next Presidential canvass. This kind of wire-pulling, and this talk of manipulating tho "Methodist vote," has beuomo ail too common of late. Wo hope it will meet with a rebuke that will show that there is more intelligence in-telligence among Methodists than these schemers think. And, lest there should bo any misunderstanding, lest soma bigot should inquiro again if the Methodist editor of this paper i3 at home, we will say in advance that these lines aro written by a hand that can wish nothing but good to that denomination, de-nomination, and can think of nothing so good lor it as that the designs of thesa ecclesiastico-political log-rollers should be uncovered and rebuked. |
