Show A Timely Varniso. On our first page will be found a lengthy article by ''Mark Twain" on the oppressed Fisher family, and the manner in which Government Gov-ernment had to hand over various '.arse amounts from the treasury n mitieate their antedeluviau sorrows. We publish pub-lish this as a timely warning to Government, Govern-ment, concerning another ca.se of pros pective claims and woes that may in crease year by year, only to he assuaged by heavy coin or currency applications. A heartless treasury has refused to ray certain Court expense-i here in I tah, because, it Is alleged, the Court wasn't running the United State-, when it thought it was, but was; only transacting trans-acting some Tonitoiial business during the greater portion of the time, which should have been done by the Court with Territorial officers to be paid for by the Territory. But the warning conveyed in this Fisher case is solemn and instructive. Can government not see the posterity of the Marshal, a-od the deputy marshals that hundred and odd and the grand jurymen and the petit jurymen, and even the witnesses wit-nesses ourselves included swooping down like a locust-cloud or a July flight of Utah grasshoppers, upon the treasury some quarter of a century hence, with claims of principal and interest in-terest enough to keep an army of clerks at work cyphering them out for a generation, gen-eration, and swallowing up, finally, the eutire revenue of the country? This is a terrible prospect for fhe now glorious glori-ous Republic of the United States. Kuin financial ruin if this matter ol Court expenses is not settled up before the interest on it becomes too huge for ordinary calculation. |
