Show TRADE WITH CALIFORNIA. When goods were transported from California to Salt Lake City by the southern route, and when the pretuiuru on gold was heavy and San Franciscu merchants demanded coin in all business busi-ness transactions, the trade between tb.3 leading city of the Golden State and the leading city of the Rocky Mountains .was necessarily limited. San Francisco merchants then, with a few .exceptions, did not seem to caie much about striking for the Utah trade. But all that is changed. The railroad has linked the two places together. to-gether. They are only two days apart now by the cars, and the events of the last few months have awakened in the merchants of the Bay City a strong desire to increase and strengthen business busi-ness relations between the two points. In support of this we need only direct attention to the list of firms that bring their business prominently. before the people of this region in the columns of the Herald, which is satisfactory evidence evi-dence if any were wanting. Offering strong inducements to buyers in Utah, they express themselves ready to do business ou terms satisfactory to both sides. They realize that the heavy prsfils, which at one time, in California, Califor-nia, were deemed essential to success in trade, can be cut down to a lower margin, and an equally fair balance be secured to the profit side of the ledger by an increased business.1 With low freights by rail, and in mauy instances accepting greenbacks as the basis of trade, they feel assured they can secure a large share of the business of this interior country.
