Show OXK RESULT. The hue and cry attempted to be raised concerning the "wooden gun rebellion" re-bellion" in this city, where nothing in the shape of "rebellion" exists in law or in fact, and which is based on a few men and boys getting together and parading par-ading with "old muskets, carbines and wooden guns," is evidently meant for outside effect. And one effect will be, to deter men of capital from coming here to erect smelting works, reduction works, and employ labor in mineral development. de-velopment. This constant, founda-tionless founda-tionless and senseless shouting about "rebellion," as if the people were in a condition of chronic insurrection, is calculated to make men at a distance dread to come here or invest money. Such ridiculous yarns lose nothing by traveling, and though we can laugh at them here, and at the fanaticism, imbecility im-becility and depraved minds which give currency to them, they grow into large proportions as they are carried abroad. It is already published at a distance that "the Mormon militia were out in force," which is simply a falsehood in so many words; and if such had been the case we fail to see where the "rebellion" "re-bellion" would come in, as the question is whether a proclamation can abrogate law, or law be held superior to the mandate of an individual. The compound com-pound of incomipency and bitterness which would like to drive matters to a serious issue in Utah, are striking di-reotly di-reotly at the prosperity of the mining interests, while anxious, without doubt, to have a good thing in the 6hape of odds and ends, plunder and so forth, could they provoke a conflict. We commend this position to the earnest consideration of all classes, who oannot fail to see the relevancy of our remarks. |
