Show After Horse Thieves. There is a gang of horse thieves operating on the head-waters of Green River, where they hide stock which they run off trom convenient points, in Bear Lake, the country around Snake River and the line of railroad from Bridger to Y asatch. The places where they are supposed to hide their stock are the Fontenclle, La Barge, Piney and other tributaries of Green river. One of them is known to be ''Dave" Lr;wis of "Ike" Potter notoriety, and another is George Sheft'er. Both are known at the guard house, Fort Bridger, and are notorious thieves. Some time since five oxen and five horses were stolen from th Salt Works in Salt River valley, east of Soda Springs. The owners tracked the animals to the thieves' camp near the Piney on Green River, saw their stock in camp, but dare not claim it for fear of being killed, there being some nine or ten in the party in camp. The owners of the stolen stock, two in number, then came to Bear Lake Valley, and reported the matter, when the Sheriff went out with a posse, found the camp and considerable con-siderable stolen stock in the custody of some mountaineers, but the thieves were absent. The stolen stock was reclaimed and brought away. Circumstances Cir-cumstances were so plain against the mountaineers that eleven head of horses were taken as security for their appearance in the settlements to clear up their share in the transactions, which they expressed themselves able and willing to do. Parties residing in localities liable to be visited by these scoundrels, should keep a strict watch over their stock ; for these thieving operations have been going on for two years, and the band is rather a fcruiid-able fcruiid-able one. |
