Show GENERAL. Coining; West. Washington, 14. The- President has not yet abandoned bis intended trip with his family to the Pacific Coast, and is making arrangements for being absent six weeks. The date of his departure is uncertain, owing to doubts as to the joint high commission, and the necessity that may exist for calling an extra session of tho Senate. German IlnUter. Xew York, 14. Baron Schloser, the minister plenipoten tiary of the North German Confederation has arrived from Mexico, wheve he has been Prussian Prus-sian minister for several years. Libel Suit, abont Jenny Llnd. A storj'i started in an American, journal and copied in some English papers, as to the matrimonial infelicity of Mdme G-oldschmidt, better known as Jenny Land, has led to several libel suits. The subject matter was adjudged adjudg-ed a clear libel by the court, as abundant abun-dant proof was adduced of the entirely happy nature of the life of Mr. and Mrs. Goldschmidt Strickland lr Washington. Washington, 14. Judge Strickland, from Utah, is here for the purpose of obtaining from Congress an appropriation appropria-tion to pay expenses of the District Court in Utah, for the trial of criminal cases recently tried. Tie Federal courts have transferred the duties heretofore here-tofore performed by the Territorial District Attorney and Territorial Marshal, Mar-shal, to the District Attorne y and Marshal Mar-shal appointed by the U. S. authority. These decisions were based upon a legal definition of the Organic Act and previous decisions of the: Supreme Court of the United States. Brigham Young, finding the ocoups.tion of his District Attorney and bis Marshal gone, refuses to pay the expenses of the Courts for the transaction of Territorial Terri-torial business. The effect of this re-refusal re-refusal is to stop the course of justice. Indictments have been found against many persons, some of them Mormons, for criminal offenses, and the parties cannot be tried because there are no funds to pay the necessary expenses. It is feared that if the courts j continue to be prevented from considering consid-ering criminal cases, summary venge ance against murderers and other criminals, crim-inals, by the action of a vigilance committee, will be the consequence. It is to prevent the re-fmactruent of such illegal sanguinary scenes as those which have been witnessed in other Territories, Ter-ritories, that an appropriation of $30, 000 is to be added to the deficiency bill now pending before Congress. It is suggested and is deemed necessary that Congress could subsequently reimburse the treasury by paying it from a tax upon the Territory. From San Franclieo. San Francisco, 14. Vigilantes are still notifying obnoxious parties to leave Virginia, Nevada, instantly, and the orders are invariably obeyed. The counsel for the defense in the Fair murder trial being unable to appear ap-pear in consequence of illness, the closing arguments are postponed until to-morrow. The schooner Marion Kimuy, whose crew were murdered by Kanakas, has arrived at Lena Fiji, having been the scene of another frightful massacre by the natives of Cherry Island. The story of the voyage is a fearful one. All the whites on board were murdered. |
