Pmrtlea contemplating tlie pur-chat pur-chat of Sewing Machlnei are request re-quest e 1 to read the fl owing from th S.w York "Trlbnne of Oct. lWtb, 18701 SEWING MACHINES. We have recently had occasion to make some inquiries into the progress of improvement improve-ment in the mechanism of sewing machines, and were not a little surprised to learn that i the central idea in the tirt tjveniion the shuttle still holds iu pltw, though many attempu have been made to supercede it. The shuttle, in onibination with the needle, is 8 till ihe n eans used to form the stitcn. in ' the lending machines, and we find that the 1 growth of trade is chiefly with the shuttle I a ids' machine- I The luiprovaiBpnts that are taking firm i hold in practical if&a are, therefore, necessarily necessa-rily in eDnet'tioo with the shuttle, either in the detail of the shuttle iu-.lt. or in other parts ot the machine conneoted with it, to cause tne whole to opera:e more perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify its use. I 31sny important gains in this direction, mad since the tirst great invention, are un-jdoubLedly un-jdoubLedly eaibo'i.ea in the "Florence" ma-lohide; ma-lohide; and we recommend our readers to ' oareiully inspect the "I loroLce" before ma- kin ft a choice. Ihe points peculiar to this machine are: I An unusual amount of money is spent in making the "Florenee," thereby securing the bet material (steel, for instance, where ! o lb ere use cadi-iron ), and the nest hush of ; important parts (the shuttle, for example, . being rigidly rejected if it varies from the ! standard l-2.0uuth of an inch!) It is con-' con-' struuted on uj simpleit scientific principles. I eutirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, i and links wnich so often got perversely cut 1 of order and sorely perplex every one but the practiced machinist by their unaccount-i unaccount-i able freaks. Ihe ".Florence" is so eaeily i managed, and iu ase is so readily learned. that an ordinary girl of ten has sense ana muscle enough to run it per tartly. Tne lock- stitch, a made by the "Florence" is very i regular ana perfect, very strong and elastic, j and is drawn into the isbric evenly, grad- uall, ezaotly, without Jerking, and without ! causing the seam to pucker, or straining the ; thread so U to endanger its breaking; oon-i oon-i jequently, veiy hne threads and light Ubrics ! can be used. Beside this, the ' F'lerence" (in all bat the cheapest style) also makes three additional stitcbes a double lock, a : single knot and a double knot whit-hare i stronger and more elvti.o than any other , stitch, and which are made by no other m&-; m&-; chine. Ihe "Florence" is the only mwh.ne i that his ft reversible eed, whereby the di-' di-' rectioo of the sewing can be instantly 'changed without stopping the work, thus 1 enabang the operator to quilt r embroider t with anujual taddity, to sew baate wards and easily strengthen ft seam wherever desired, and, dnaily, by a few repealed stitches, to , fasten ends in the quietest and strongest ' way. It i the only machine that has a self-adjusting self-adjusting shut tie-thread tension, which i works so perfectly that the operator can run 1 across the : eaviest seams and sew the finest : Linec and the thickest broadcloth in unme-- unme-- diaie suceeun wuOont breaking the thread and without chaasmf the needle, stitch or tension. The "Florenc" dras-3 the thread into the cloth with aneoaled precwion and certainty, by means of an ingenious aoio-matic aoio-matic "take-up" wheel, which disposes of the slack thread left alter the stitch with an , accurate promptness that prevents ail snarling snarl-ing or droppui of stitches, and allows the : operator to sew backward, or to run or! the , cloth and on again, with perfeci impunity, it has an improved elastic hemmer, exclusively exclu-sively iu own, which is managed with ease, I ana will biub ft hem of any width on any , material. Is a biK'k well kuuwn to every justice of the pe:u-e. praoticini, lawyer and public oficer in l:l:not iuj tue .ortawestera MateJ ana i'erritorics, the most uiei'ul and complete work of the kind extant. I: hi lately been revised by the author, And materially improved by the addition oi union iiuportuut uittrr. giving a l tha late laws and published decisions down to ISod This book has, up to the present time, reached reach-ed a ljrb-r sale than any other work of the kind in thii country. This fact may be men-tioLtd men-tioLtd ax evidence of iu superior merit. Iu excellence consints both in the matter embraced, em-braced, and the arrangement or classifica tion of subjects. In the collection of matter contained in the wo.k it is intended to give all the statute law and the general principles of the common com-mon law in connection therewith, which a justice of the pt-ace, polic magistrate, con-stableor con-stableor coroner will require in discharging their duties, or that a practicing lawyer will need for reference in ordinary cases, or that may be required for the information of every business man. This will entirely supenede the necessity for reference to the volumes ol the statutes. 1 he arrangement of the work is methodical, methodi-cal, and r the essence of iu value, presenting present-ing each subject in its order aud in its proper relation with others. The plan of the arrangement is entirely original with the author, being the result of study and practical experience. It has long been a subject of general remark that the author has, in this work, presented the law with a clearness ana simplicity of style which reu ders the whole ali-e plain to the common understanding as to the more advanced lawyer. law-yer. The justice of the peace, police magistrate, constable, and coroner will find in this book all the necessary forms and instruc tions in regard to every branch of his duty. The practicing lawyer will find in it, collected col-lected and arrangeJ to convenient forx., all the statute law and derision, with reference to adjudicated oses applicable in ordinary practice. The business man will find in it a complete collection of forms required in the transac-, transac-, tion of business. Students of the law will likewise find thie a very valuable work for perusal and reference, refer-ence, as containing the general principles of the common law, clea ly stated. In connection connec-tion with the ordinary branches of juris prudence. pru-dence. The following brief reference to the contents con-tents oi this work will afford iu some degree an idea of its peculiar merits. The book is divided in five paru. the subject of each being be-ing methodically arranged in chapters or ap propriate subdivisions, as follows : Part 1.
