' - ' ' ' : ' ' ' : Also, to contract with hotel proprietors, proprie-tors, saloon and store-keerers, trustees of churches, principals of schools and colleges, and mining, manufacturing and raihoad companies, to give them a far more brilliant light than can be obtained ob-tained from eoal-oil lamps, at lea? cost in proportion to the light given. ' ECONOMICAL GAS FOR COUNTRY TOWNS. The great cost of making, on a small scale, coal gas, passably free from im-purties. im-purties. has prevented the introduction introduc-tion of. thii prime convenience of modern times into small towns, and the generally bad quality and high j price of the production, where coal-gas works have been erected, in other than the largest cities, have limited the con- sumption te less than one-half what it I would be if the gas were good aud Tur-niched Tur-niched as cheap a light as kerosene oil. When as of fair- quality can -be manufactured witn inexpensive works, ; and at a reasonable price, every little I town, with even one well-built street, will have its gas works, aad the profits of the manuiacturers will be more certain cer-tain and more liberal than those now I earned by most country gas companies. The scientific and general press have repeatedly cal'ed attention to the field for discovery . opened to inventors in solving the question. "What shall we do for a safe light, more satisfactory than oil, aud to cheap that the poorest can use it?"' Many solutions of this question have been proposed, but hitherto experience has shown that all were inferior, for some cause or other, when bronnht into practice, to the old method of generating illuminating gas. The Pac.fic Pneumatic Gas Company, Com-pany, however, claims to have an swered the question fully, and is prepared pre-pared to erect vroiks which will fur-niifh fur-niifh gas, free from all impurities and superior in brilliancy to the best coal gas, at from one-third to one-fourth the cost at which, in this State, coal gas, in quantities of from 2,000 to 20,000 cubic feet per day, can be made. The principle of these works for small towns, is the same as that used in our domestic works ; the difi'crenoe is in the method of compressing the itmosphere, and of charging it with tho vapors of gasolene. In works for towns a rotary . air pump, driven .by a small Bteam engine, or other steadv motive power, forces the air through the gasolene, making an excessively rich gas. This is collected into a gasholder, gas-holder, and then, by the admission ol air direct from the pump, it is diluted in the proportions of one, two or three pint" of atmosphere to one of gas. a.-in a.-in the judgment of the operator, guided guid-ed by a tent-light, may be desirable to bring tho content to the ' desired quality. The Pacific Pneumatic Gas Com-pauy Com-pauy has erected works on this principle prin-ciple at Mare Island, for the Uniteti State-.
