Show Iron Work. While the mineral resources of Utah have been receiving considerable attention, it has been a matter of surpri.-e that the "backbone" "back-bone" of prosperity was not more thoroughly thor-oughly prospected and developed, so that with our unlimited supply of iron ore and fire-proof clay, we might soon be placed in a position to supply Utah in the harder metal. We are pleased to see the step taken by the Deseret Novelty Works to this end, and think they have a fine avenue open for them to make their operations profitable. At their works in the 17th ward they have some few iron and wood lathes and planing and gear-cutting machines driven by steam power, and a furnace which turns out the iron sparkling and free. Some of their castings display an advancement in running iron above any effort, we believe, that has been mad e here before. Most of the castings cast-ings of onr foundries have been too hard for the file and too brittle for ser vice ; but those shown us were pliant enough fur any use of the machinist. Their model maker and machinists the business, and feel determined to make their co-operative movement: "a success. Of course their operations are yet npon a small stale ; but, with the records of the origin of some of the largest firms in the world before them, they can take courage and persevere per-severe in the conimenrbihlo pntomn The firm make a point of their determination deter-mination t.'i do everything at eastern prices, with the cost of freight added thereto. A visit to their works will be pleasing pleas-ing to all interested in this matter. |
