Yesterday a visit was made by our reporter to the Stevens Battery, which has been in the course of construction for the past twenty-six years, at Hobo-ken, Hobo-ken, with a view of learning what progress pro-gress had been made of late toward the completion of the sister vessel of the Dundcrberg, which was purchased some few years ago by the French government. gov-ernment. The reporter found great difficulty in getting any facts, as every endeavor is made to keep the condition of this monster battery a secret. He, however, how-ever, ascertained that work had been stopped, and all tho men discharged, dis-charged, with the exception of about twenty, in the place of one thousand, which could well be employed to get the gigantic vessel finished. That is owing to the $1,000,000 granted some few years ago by the United States Government, and the same amount bequeathed be-queathed by the late Mr. E. A. Stevens, the brother of the inventor of the scheme, having been nearly exhausted ex-hausted and no further money being forthcoming. The huge vessel may almost be said to have been left to take care of itself, and unless government govern-ment should take the matter up, she will in all probability never be comrieted. as a vast sum is still needed to finish her. Since the death of Mr. E. A Stevens the battery has been in charge of General McClellan, who was selected as being the most corn-patent corn-patent engineer of the day. This gentleman saw fit to make great alterations, altera-tions, and may be said to have entirely rebuilt the vessel having torn out her engines, and taken away the prow, or ram, which extended some sixty feet, and in the place of making her a protection pro-tection for the shore and harbor, has designed her for a swift steaming ram and iron-clad. At the piesent time she is more incomplete than she was three years ago, owing to these alterations, as many of her engines have not been replaced. Owing to a new street being shortly to be cut through a portion of the ground on which this battery is being built, she will have to be removed from her stocks, but what will be done with her or where her destination will be is not known. General McClellan has, owing to the exhaustion of funds, given up his appointment ap-pointment as engineer of the work, and it is now superintended by M. Newton, a nephew of General Newton, and Mr. Pearce. The greater portion of the armor and other necessary material can be found lying about the premises waiting to be ;. put in its proper place. In the place of the fourteen engines which were originally placed in the hold of the vessel, she is to have ten others of superior power, but the boilers still remain. re-main. Two screws will propel the monster vessel, worked by eight engines, which in turn are directed and worked by the remaining two. Her hull is composed of wrought iron over one inch in thickness. Above her water-line water-line she is covered with enormous piles or beams from eighteen inches in thickness at the base to above six at the top. At present it is not decided what her armament will be, but it is suggested that she will be fitted up below the deck, the muzzle of the gun being de pressed for this purpose after the firing of each shot. In length she is three hundred and sixty feet, her beam is sixty feet and her hight from keel to deck a little over thirty feet It js stated that the family of the late Mr. Stevens have given up their interest in the mammoth ironclad, as they will not run the risk of a heavy lawouit which might come between them and the State of New Jersey, should they proceed to dispose of her to any Government, the vessel having been bequeathed to that State by Mr. E.
