Show A DISGRACEFUL PARAGRAPH. We are sorry to .sec the colntnns of the New York Herald disgraced by such language and such logic (!) as will be found below, taken from the report of Dr. Newman's three hours and twenty minutes' sermon delivered in this city. Who were senseless and shameless enough to greet the language lan-guage with "laughter and applause," we do not know, but they must haTe had very groveling and corrupt instincts in-stincts and have been themselves impure im-pure in thought and act. We give the reporter credit for having done his duty. We are also sorry that a man could be found occupying so high a position as Dr. Newman who would so degrade himself and his position by the use of such language. Its publication here will set at rest a denial, fiercely given by some, to the statement that he did use the language quoted. It can be found in the New York Herald of August 18, fourth page, near the bottom bot-tom of the second column. Here it is: It is assumed that monogamy can no more be inferred from the creation of Adam and Eve than the monogamy of brutes can be inferred from the fact that God created "animals in pairs." But animals are not social beings. That which is essential to marriage cannot can-not be predicated of them. I have no objection to an animal rising up to me, but I have a serious objection to my going down to an animal. The males of the brutes neglect their young ; therefore now mark the logic therefore there-fore shall fathers follow their example and neglect their children ? The bull does not stick to one cow mark the logic therefore a man should not stick to one woman. Therefore, I say mark the logic the bulls are allpolyga-ruists. allpolyga-ruists. Laughter and applause. Such is the logical conclusion from the creation crea-tion of animals in pairs. We apologize for pul'lUhing such a filthy paragraph, bur the nuives through which it has come are our excuse. ex-cuse. We would like iu a.-k the reverend rev-erend Doctor, and those who feel inclined in-clined to support his position, a question. ques-tion. As the animal referred to is promiscuous in such intercourse, are its prototypes to be found among honest hon-est polygamies, or among the patrons of that prostitution which almost found a defender iu the gentleman ? The comparison between lewd women who are the subjects of licentious men's lu:-ts and passions, and the females of the bovine ?pecies that remember by instinct their times and seasons, is too obviously in favor of the brute creation to be iwelt upon. |
