Show CONDITION OF IOWA TROOPS General Lee Denies Reports That ItLny Are Sick Washington Aug 21Late tonight Adjutant Generl Corbin made public the following dispatch from General Fltzhugh Lee In command of the Seventh Sev-enth army corps at Jacksonville Replying to dlatc from Hon John H Gear Burlington la to you will state that the condition of the Fiftieth Iowa Is exaggerated Yesterday mornings morn-ings report shows 1015 enlisted men sows enlsted present 70 sick in hpspits four In quarter The total number sick In the hospital in the Second division to which it belongs is 404 out of 10797 enlisted en-listed men present The division hos pia Is ably managed and well taken care of has electric tans and comfortable comfort-able applIances of all sorts and has now 190 soldIer nurses many Of whom have had experience in civil hospItals In addition the surgeon general has ordered 50 traIned women nurse here who wIll arrive soon and an officer has been sent north to enlIst 150 trained nurses from i9 large cities of the north The Fiftieth Iowa has lately had its camp moved and is l getting along well The trouble at home seems to be the result of want of knowledge of these existing facts The Fortyninth Iowa the other Iowa regiment here has by yesterdays report 1257 enlisted enlist-ed present of which 12 are sick in the hospital and 31 in quarter Apart from climatic summer fevers there is very little sickness in this corns Signed LEE Major General Commanding Seventh rmy Corsi |
