Show WHERE SPAIN WILL STRIKE Probably Along the New England and Southern Coast New York May 3A special to the Herald from Washington says Fearing an attack upon the seaports of the North Atlantic coast by the Spanish menofwar now on their way to western waters Secretary Alger has taken steps to further improve the seacoast sea-coast defenses There is excellent authority for the statement that the administration believes be-lieves that the Spanish menofwar will appear at some port on the coast and attempt to retaliate for the loss of the Philippine Islands by doing as much damage as possible and when this work has been completed sail with all speed to Porto Rico and if necessary fight their way into San Juan As to the point where Spain will strike the authorities are totally unable un-able to say New York is considered in a very good condition to resist attack but this is not the case with the New England cities and with ports along the southern coast Captain W P Duvall military aide Ito I-to Secretary Alger has been inspecting inspect-ing the defenses of Boston and other New England cities forseveral days It was to prevent Spanish privateers I from ravishing the northeast coast that the cruisers Columbia 1 and the Minneapolis Minne-apolis were senftO patrol duty there and the mobilization of the northern patrol squadron at Provincetown is with the view of having a naval force handy to resist an attack on any pf the northeastern ports Instructions to the commanding officers of-ficers of the auxiliary cruisers Yankee Prairie Dixie and Yosemite reeuire I them to join the flagship San Francisco at Provincetown without delay Their crews will have gun practice on the way and will be given as much training I train-ing as possible Besides Commodore Howells squadron squad-ron the ports will be defended by great I guns and General Merritt will improve the fortifications as much as possible |
