Robbers Supposed to Have Secured at Least 86000 but Hissed a Great Lot of Valuable Bonds and Papers Cashier Was Alone at the Time of the Attack Evidence That He Made a Great Fight for His Life Somersworth N H April 16 While resisting the entry of two desperate and determined robbers and during a heroic struggle to protect 15000 or more in money and securities in tht compartments of the open vault of the Great Falls National bank of Somers worth this afternoon Cashier Joseph A Stickney was struck down and brutally murdered near the dp hich h < had occupied for years After killing Stickney the iri > Jerei ransacked the vault and lied witi all the cash with the exception of a few gold pieces As near a can be estimated 5000 was taken but it is possible that the loss will exceed this sum as none bu the dead cashier knew the exact amount that was in the Institution at the time The robbers after knocking Stickney down with a blackjack cut his throat The most remarkable feature of the robbery is that 100000 in bonds of the United States which were kept in one of the drawers of the big vault and which the robbers examined hastily were not taken Neither was any of the i negotiable paper and securities of the bankIn fact nothing is missing except ex-cept the cash No one was aware that th re anything wrong at the bank until nearly 2 oclock or an hour uicei murderous work was done The rob wa bers had ample time to escape and scores of deouty sheriffs rr r b police and citizens are scouring this section of the state and the adjoining state of Maine which is just across the Salmon ± > ans river lium mi The men made their visit to the bank at the busiest time of the day in the locality where the bank is situated and so completely and thoroughly did they accomplish the robbery that only an uncertain clue and a very meagre i description was obtained The bank was surrounded by hundreds when the news of the terrible affair became known and large numbers came from surrounding cities Had the robbers been apprehended soon after the murder and robbery became be-came public It woulcT have been difficult diffi-cult to prevent a lynching In the Granite Gran-ite state Great sympathy is expressed for tht family of the murdered man who In addition to his position as cashier and director of the Great Falls bank was treasurer of several local organizations organiza-tions It has always been customary for Cashier Stickney and the banks clerk Mrs Parker Swazey to close the bank at 12 oclock and not to reopen it until un-til 2 oclock Today Mrs Swazey left her desk at noon The cashier however how-ever remained looking over the banks accounts and i is thought he was preparing to go out when the robbers entered The first suspicion that the bank had been robbed was at 158 wa when Mr Frank P Reed went up the staircase of the bank building and found the thick plate glass In the outer door or hall door of the bank completely com-pletely shattered He notified City Marshal Eaton and they broke In the door and found evidences of a desperate desper-ate struggle On the floor In a great pool of blood was the lifeless body of Stfckney His head had been nearly severed from the body The head was marked with several deep gashes and the skull was fractured frac-tured The body was covered with blood and the walls and furniture bore additional evidences of the terrible perately deed Stickney had been fighting des The first clew that the officers found was from persons who reported seeing a man hurrying up the hill carrying a bag heavily weighted over his shoulder shoul-der He threw the bag behind a stonewall stone-wall changed some of his clothes and finally got Into the buggy driven by another man Other persons reported seeing the buggy and In West Riches ter a horse and buggy were seen headed for Salmon Falls river The outfit has mysteriously disappeared despite the fact that the whole section hereabouts is being searched tonight Arrested on Suspicion Waltham Mass April IGCon Harrington I Har-rington the New England examateur 115pound boxing champion and Johnny Briggs were arrested this afternoon af-ternoon on suspicion of being concerned con-cerned in the Teele robbery on Wednesday Wednes-day night The officers had scarcely completed the search of the two men which revealed 80 and some Confederate Confed-erate coin when a telegram was received re-ceived from the mayor of Somers worth N H asking that these very men be apprehended The first telegram tele-gram was followed In a few minutes by a second and that In turn by a third all urging the police to use their utmost endeavors to secure these menThe men-The Confederate coin was identified beyond be-yond a doubt as having been stolen i from the Teele residence After his I arrest Hartlgan is said to have admitted ad-mitted to the police that he had been I In Somersworth today He stated that I I he and Briggs went there on Wednesday Wednes-day but was positive In his statement that both left at 1 oclock this morn mor Ing going direct to Boston A fourth telegram to the police from the mayor of Somersworth came late tonight plyIng ply-ing the additional fact that Stickneys murderers had been traced to the Boston train leaving at 210 This statement may clear Hartican and Briggs in this affair as the train d snot s-not reach Boston until 420 while the men were arrested in this city 12 miles distant at 433 Another One Suspected Manchester N H Aprll16A special spec-ial to the Union at 2 oclock this morn Ing from Somersworth says that a well known young man of that city Is suspected of the Stickney murder The man has been absent from the city I since the commission of the crime but a suspect answering his description was arrested in Milton some dozen miles distant last evening and will be taken to Somersworth this morn Ins |
