Show THE WHEEL I CHICAGO Dec 5The judges of the TimesHerald motorcycle contest met I today and carefully considered the claims clams I of the vehicles which competed in tho I Thanksgiving day contest They awarded the gold medal to the Morris and Salom Electrobat of Philadelphia on the follow I ing points Safety ease of control absence ab-sence of noise vibration heat and odor cleanliness and general excellence of design de-sign and workmanship The first money I prize of S2000 was awarded to the Duryea motor Wagon company of Springfield Mass This motorcycle came in first in I the road race and also secures favorable notice for range of speed and pull with compactness of comlJce design I H Mueller of Decatur Ill was awarded award-ed 51300 and is mentioned for good performance per-formance in the road race and economy in operation The other awards were operaton awars I Sturges electric motocycle of Chicago 500 R H Meyer Co of New York I 500 G W Lewis Chicago 200 Hayes Apperson Kokomo Ind 150 Max I Hertel 100 and the De 10 Verne company com-pany of New York 30 The Morris and Sal m and the Sturges vehicles were propelled by storage batteries bat-teries and the others by gasoline or some product of petroleum The race was run on a fiftyfour mile course a foot deep in snow and slush but the awards are largely based on the results shown in an elaborate series of scientific tests conducted con-ducted by Messrs Summers and Lundie in Chicago I A Canauian contest is scheduled for May 183o and a announcement is expected in a few days of a big race to be hell near New York some time next summer WESTBORO Mass Dec 5 Interviewed Inter-viewed today on the subject of the suspension of Murphy by the L A W racing board Mr Elliott Burris managing director of the Humber Co said I have just received a telegram tele-gram from Murphy stating he will arrive rive in New York on Monday Asked if Humber Co would take any legal action in the matter Mr Burns said Burrs I am satisfied Murphy is innocent No evidence that has been given to the public by members of the racing board proves Murphy guilty of any agreement agree-ment with Cabanne and Titus in fact all the evidence shows that Murphy refused to enter into an agreement I am awaiting Murphys return home to decide what our action will be The counsel of the company has just rendered ren-dered an opinion on the subject in which he says The racing board has by its proceedings in Murphys case inflicted upon him a serious personal injury towit Practically debarring him from obtaining a livelihood in his customary business I is a body without authority To my mind its action is tantamount to a conspiracy As the board has acted without any legal authority each individual can be held responsible for any damages that the sufferer may undergo by reason rea-son of the action of the old board In regard to prizes won by Murphy between Sep 2 and the date of his permanent suspension I have been advised ad-vised that if the courts set aside the suspension of Murphy the promoters of the race meets where Murphy has competed will be obliged to deliver the prizes to him |
