Show THE UTAH PIONEERS I How the Four Survivors Were Received Re-ceived at San Francisco I San Francisco Chronicle There are I but four survivors of the men employed em-ployed at Marshalls mill at Coloma to I whom he showed the gold he had found I on themillrace I on Jan 24 1S4S These four pioneers arrived in the city yesterday I yes-terday morning on the overland train I from Ogden as guests of the Asspcia tion of California Pioneers They are I ton W Bigler William J Johnston AzaHah Smith and James L Brown They were icceived by c committee I consisting of J H Jewett president of the association General W H Pratt I tle associaton Hitel and Almarin B Paul installed at the Russ I House The visitors are instaled j I H W BIgler is suffering from a bad cold a = d last evening his cough was so distressing that he was able to talk I very little He is over S3 years of age but is still apparently sound and i healthy Before starting for San Francisco Fran-cisco he had a stage ride of 130 miles to Milford the nearest railroad station to his home at St George Utah His mind is still active and his memory excellent ex-cellent while his hearing is unimpaired unim-paired James 1 Brown who is about 70 years of age lives at Salt Lake City He is the author of a book in which he tells the story of the discovery of gOld and some Interesting incidents in connection con-nection with the important event necton Azariah Smith came all the way from Manti Sanpete county Utah to attend the jubilee He considers himself quite still his hair is though I a young man sti white with the frost of nearly 70 winters win-ters William J Johnston the fourth member mem-ber of this remarkable party < is tall and of stalwart appearance carrying himself him-self erect and with something of a military mili-tary air He resides at Raymond in New Mexico The four will ride In the procession wi tomorrow i < i a position of honor especially pecially reserved for them They are all Mormons by the way as were most I of the men who worked at Sutters mill I at the time of the discovery of gold |
