Show AN OFFENSIVE REPORT House Committee Casts Reflections Upon UtaH Senators ASPHALTUDI LEASE FIGHT CONGRESSMAN LACEY DENOUNCES DENOUNC-ES THE CANNON BILL Mineral Prospecting In the Corridors of the Capitol Utah Senators Denounce the Beport and Regard I the Language as Personally Offensive I Of-fensive Influence of Syndicate Washington Office of The Herald t I 1415 G Street N W f j Washington D C June 15 The favorable favor-able resort of the house committee on the Cannon bill opening the Uncompahgre mineral lands was printed today The house committee amends the bill by authorizing au-thorizing the secretary of the interior to lease the reserved mineral lands on royalties royal-ties determined by the secretary The amendments and more particularly certain cer-tain language in the report have outraged the members of the Utah delegation In this report there are expressions that the members of the delegation regard as personally per-sonally offensive I is stated that the opening of the reservation as provided by the senate bill would lead to hi scandalous scan-dalous capture of the mineral wealth of Utah by a few shrewd men and that the proposed opening is a case of Mineral Min-eral prospecting in the corridors of the rnnltnl The Utah senators do not mnce words 1 in denouncing this report as having been drawn up in the interests of the eastern syndicate that seeks to seize the lands They say that whatever happens the Uncompahgro gilsonlte lands shall never be leased as provided in the house amendment Judge King has carefully investigated the action of the house committee on this matter He says that the report was never formally submitted to the committee tee and is the individual work of Judge Lace of the house committee RELIEF FROM ASSESSMENTS Representative Shafroth this afternoon reported from the house public lands committee com-mittee the bill relieving enlisted mine owners from assessment work The bill contains the amendments suggested by Judge Bell extending the operations of the law to cover partial as well as entire owners of mines In his report Mr Shaf roth says The statutes of the United States require that the locator of each mining claim shall do 10 worth of work each year upon the same In order to retain re-tain his right to acquire title to the property prop-erty This work is called the annual assessment as-sessment work A great many soldiers who are interested in mines have enlisted in the army and it Is impossible for them to do the assessment work on their claims while they are absent risking their lives there ought to be n possibility of them losing an interest in any mining claim they possess by a failure to do this work I The amendments which are made are for the purpose of protecting those soldiers and sailors who have undivided interests I in mining claims which should be protected pro-tected as well as where the claim is entirely I en-tirely held by enlisted men UTAH PENSIONS I Senator Cannon this afternoon called up and secured the passage of the following I pension bills Mrs F B Hamilton 35 John AV Hailey 2 Mrs Sarah A Erb J20 P O Murch 12 The case of Mrs Erb has broken the record for rapid passage as it was only introduced yesterday Washington June 15 Idaho Postoffices established Elva Bingham county Robert Andrus postmaster Thomas I Bingham county Mary Murphy postmaster j post-master Pensions granted > today Utah Original Alex W Vogt Salt Lake City 6 Increase in-crease Benjamin W Valentine Green Rier A to S10 I Idaho Renewal William J Barker West Lake J6 J6FRANK H HOSFORD I Q |
