city which will be all that will be taken for a time He goes to Mercur today where he will make an effort to enlist some of the desirable material which is said to be lingering in the vicinity waiting for a recruiting officer to come along and swear them in The names of the men enlisted here yesterday were Sergeant Louis Gilbert formerly of company A National Guard of Utah Louis Wolz Alfred AVi gren Ray A Young Albert C Allen of The Herald reportorial staff and Axel Ongren RECRUITING AT BEAVER The following special telegram to The Herald was received yesterday Beaver Utah July 1 Captain Stacey Sta-cey of the National Guard of Utah and recruiting officer for the second call for volunteers with Dr Niel from Richfield arrived here early In the afternoon af-ternoon coming per request of Governor Gov-ernor Wells His uniform and associates asso-ciates attracted considerable attention and at 7 p m several dynamite shots announced the rally at the dourt house which was filled to its utmost capacity an hour later Major Frank Farnsworth called the meeting to order and proceeded in a few remarks to state the object of the meeting He was followed by J Frank Tilton in a 15minute patriotic speech which was vigorously applauded William Wil-liam White editor of the Beaver Blade received cheers for his recital of the causes and justice of the present conflict con-flict and his graphic recital of Spanish Span-ish misrule In Cuba the Philippines her national treachery and her certain and deserved downfall He was followed fol-lowed by other prominent citizens and then Captain Stacey surprised the audience au-dience by his eloquence and patriotic fervor of address He called for volunteers vol-unteers and instantly responded Mr Christians fourth son Grey who attains at-tains his majority Monday morning Walter S Tolton the city clerk and first counsellor to Bishop Mumford recently re-cently returned from a mission to the southern states vas next The sons of Thomas Frazer and Thomas Cart wright old residents and pioneers were next This created a wave of excitement ex-citement Captain Stacey explained that the recruits would be expected to report in Salt Lake Tuesday night The men were examined soon after Walter Tolton and Gay Christian being rejected re-jected Joseph Shaw who served four years in the regular army at Fort Keogh and other points during the Indian In-dian wars enlisted and was passed and with the oldest son of Cunningham Mathews made six from Beaver accepted ac-cepted Mr Shaw is assured of a commission com-mission before leaving for the Philippines Philip-pines This must mean a warrant as there will be but three commissioned officers in the battery Shaw will doubtless be made a noncommissioned noncommission-ed officer Captain Stacey leaves for Adamsville and Mine sville early tomorrow to-morrow where lie will hold rallies for volunteers as also at Milford Frisco and other points He expects to leave for Salt Lake tomorrow evening with an enrollment of 25 from this county There are four others who are anxious to enlist who are out in the mountains with fishing parties MILLS WILL RETURN Recruiting Officer Mills of the engineers engi-neers will return from Butte today and resume the work of recruiting for the regiment of men commanded by Colonel Colo-nel Willard Young He will remain here long enough to complete the week in be of his appointment to some one of Uncle Sams firstclass battleships Skull of a Missing Woman Found In Idaho Special to The Herald Boise Ida July 1The mystery surrounding sur-rounding the disappearance three years ago of llr and Mrs Dick Thomas from their home on Sinker creek Owyhsp county seems in a fair way to be cleared clear-ed up They were welltodo people and their disappearance was complete They left a large amount of property behind but a large sum of money secured se-cured from the sale of stock could not be accounted for Recently a sheepherder sheep-herder found a skull on Sinker creek which he thought was that of an Indian In-dian but an investigation shows it to be the skull of a woman and the authorities au-thorities believe it is part of the remains re-mains of Mrs Thomas The herder has been detained as a witness It Is believed be-lieved he knows a great deal about the case Mr and Mrs Thomas were well connected and their strange disappearance disap-pearance was the talk of the entire state |
