excitement that has I arisen over the gold district known a Thunder Mountain The excitement was started by the appearance of the Caswell brothers in Warrens with 10 pounds of I gold A great many men have visite the district and all report that it is phenomenal phe-nomenal Mr Holton has a lot of the rock brought out from the camp for him by a friend The samples were left at Veiser but i is his intention to have I them thoroughly tested The report made by Mr Holton of the camp does not differ materially from I that published by the Statesman about a year Ago At that time the Caswells visited Boise with gold from Thunder I mountain and were interviewed by this paper the prediction being made by the Statesman that the district would prove one of the wonders of the mining history of the country That prediction seems to be in a fair way of fulfillment The vein from which the gold is taken Is from 150 to 2 feet wide I I a soft porphyry which decomposes when exposed ex-posed to the air The material is taken out and piled up until the water starts In the spring By that time it has slacked and Is run through sluices The entire body of ore averages more than 10 a ton In gold and ca be mined and worked at nominal cost Mr Holton quotes a Denver mining man who recently visited the camp assaying as-saying thtt it Is certainly a second Cripple Creek he had never se ns such a showin anywhere else The great lode has oeen found at a point some seven miles from Thunder mountain and i 1 believed i will be opened throughout through-out the Intervening distance Thunder mountain Is on a branch of I the Middle fork of the Salmon I is reached by way of Marble creek from one side and via Monumental creek from the other ote ELKHORN DISTRICT Pennsylvania Oil Men Are Making Heavy Investments There Hev Iveents Tee Baker City Democrat At no time since the frt operation of mining at Elkhorn mountain a district 1 miles across Powder valley and northwest of Baker City has there been such a promising promis-ing outlook for that camp a at the present pres-ent time True the BaisleyJUknorn companion properties have been successfully success-fully worked and the output of gold from these mines aggregated a fabulous amount during the past years but never until now have these mines and others In the district been on such a footing to Insure permanent operation The reason for this bright outlook for the Elkhor mountain district is the investment in-vestment of capital that insures practical practi-cal and extensive working of the mines Early in the spring the attention of Pennsylvania oil men was attracted to the Denny group of mines and a purchase pur-chase was made A few weeks ago other capitalists from thf oil state through their representative purchased the well known RobbinsElkhorn mine and now the whole district bids fair to be owned and controlled by these eastern investors a number of whom are now In the camp laying their plans for future action At the Denny group the Beaver Min gup ng company have started a 7000 foot tunnel and a ditch threequarters of a mile In length tw convert the waters of Pine creek for mill purposes and to furnish fur-nish power for the operation of Burleigh rAt drills At the RobbinsEIkhorn preparations are under way to put the mill In shape for ore reduction and a large force of miners are soon to be put on at the mine The BalslcyElkhorn mine and mill are in successful operation and concentrates concen-trates bi the fourhorse wagon load are being hauled to Baker City dally for fchlrment to the smelter Various other properties are being extensively tensively developed and It Is no exaggeration exagger-ation to say that the Elkhorn mountain district Is one of the best In all the Baker f City gold fields MUTES AT BAR Great Prosperity Now Characterizes the Industry In That District Baker City Democrat Conservative men who have made personal observa recently estimated that fully tions have recenty estmated fly 1500 miners are laboring In the golden districts tributary to Baker City Those who ought to know say there has never been a time in Baker countys history when so much capital has sought sate investment in our golden mountains as at present and during the past few AS incidents showing the great activity now manifest in every one of the Baker districts may be mentioned the rustling > pera CTTLLTCTS RETURNS Prefers laving I Sat Lake t Chicago George Culllns the former prominent Salt Lake business man wlio left this city a little over two year ago and went to Chicago has returned to Zion to stay and Is located at his old quarters at the CuIIen hotel Mr Cullins was engaged in the real estate business in Chicago during dur-ing his absence from here but does not like the climate and atten-tion to them in future Mr jCullins Is looking well and his many friends here will be delighted to welcome him back Mr Cullins is an oldtime Democrat and a staunch silver man He is however not by any means sanguine of the success suc-cess of silver in 1900 The bankers manufacturers man-ufacturers and monopolists have such a hold on the masses of the people whom they coerce to vote for the gold men that sliver has a very uphill fight to wage GEYSEBTVTATUPST STOCK Supreme Cur Opinion Causes a Slump In the Price I rce The supreme court opinion which was handed down on Tuesday decreeing that S
