Show I THERE POLITICS I I An Ogden TrTnn Says Tammany Hal Prevented Barton and Graves Extradition Ex-tradition Clarence Barton and Leon Graves have certainly received a great deal of newspaper notoriety during the past I few weeks and from present appearances appear-ances are destined to have more for I the Utah authorities seem or to have given up the effort to get them back here The statement made yesterday that five separate warrants have been sent for them is denied and It is certain cer-tain that only two sets of requisition papers have been issued The bo shave s-have been each charged three times with crime however but it is stated that in two cases the charges were two counts alleged in one warrant In another case a warrant was recalled because defective These circumstances perhaps gave rise to the report that five separate warrants had been issued instead of three From all accounts a hot contest has been waged in Albany and New York between the friends of the boys and the friends of the Ogtlen officers An Ogden gentleman at present sojourn ing in New York wrote a priate letter some few days ago in which he gossips gos-sips freely about the requisition matter mat-ter terThis This letter was yesterday shown The Te Herald The writer says politics have become mixed up in the affair and ventures ven-tures his opinion that the fact ot Pardon Par-don Clerk Joyce being an influential member of Tammany and the attorney for the boys being likewise had much I to do with the fact at the requisition I betnsr denied This view is bore out by a clipping from the PressKnickerbocker of Albany Al-bany which says Pardon Clerk Joyce refused yesterday yester-day to surrender Clarence Barton and Leon Graves to the authorities cC Utah on the charg of appropriating 5200 from the Utah Loan and Trust company pany on the ground that the requisitions requisi-tions were so drawn as to not warrant i I him dcXng so An unusual feature of I the case was the fact that Joyce even i refused a hearing after he found the I papers defective The letter above referred to states I I that fhe governor was rushed with work examining bills which would become i be-come a jaw wltnout his signature Unless I J un-less he reported on them I is on this i fact that the Ogden officers hope to get 2gI r Ioi a rehearing i of the case If they con I get the boys under arrest Again they wEI then apply for a requisition on the corrected papers which have not been before the governor who has in fact i I considered no papers at al |
