Show STATE NORMAL SCHOOL Good Reasons Why Cedar City Was Chosen Cedar City May 23 Recent events have made the past few weeks Important Im-portant t Cedat The decision of the committee appointed by the last legislature legis-lature to locate a suitable place for the establishment of a branch of the state normal school is indorsed by all who live south of Parowan City The people here realized that i was a business proposition strictly and did not ask to be favorably considered because of their abilities In tendering receptions They did however submit some things living breathing facts for which they asked careful consideration Some of those facts upon which they believe the commission was Justified in ren dering its decision are as follows Cedar City Is centrally located in the southern educational district embrac ing the following counties viz Kane with a population of 196S Washington 4619 Iron 3123 Garfield2SS8 Wayne 1520 Piute 1727 and Beaver 3791 Its distance from the principal towns in said counties being as follows Kanab 70 miles St George 55 miles Virgin City 45 miles Leeds 37 miles Ylrgn r t L = villa 50 miles Toquerville 3G miles I Hebron 30 miles Pine Valley 40 miles Pinto 30 miles Junction 5 miles Pangultch miles Beaver 55 miles I Milford 55 miles and Minersville 4 > I mires Wayne and Plute counties countes bowser will natural in the future I be attached to some other school district dis-trict I know of no city or town in Utah I where the per cent ot mortality is less Diphtheria and all other dreaded contagious con-tagious diseases are unknown mle our water at certain periods of the year Is not the most desirable yet we are favored with pure mountain springs near the city which our city council contemplate utilizing in the near future for culinary purposes I is claimed by some that Cedar City is destined to be a manufactures town and that the results of the erection of erecton Iron works will be a smoky unhealthy atmosphere We have no fears of such I unfavorable results as our Iron mines are from ten to 15 miles distant and eIO stfh a11 tf = on lower levels than the coal beds from I which the furnaces are to be supplied Tnis naturally places the works at ten miles or more from the town for the Idea of hauling ores on an uphill grade I when the fuel to supply the furnaces can be hauled to the mines across the vale without exhausting a pound of I steam is an absurdity The establishment establish-ment of such manufactories however i near the city will Increase the patronage patron-age and support of the normal school I and thereby prove a benefit i I Right at our doors we have an abundance I abun-dance of building rock Ime tone beds i of brick and fire clay mountains of cay i gypsum inexhaustible veins of coal In variety groves df pulp material and forests of saw timber Fertile valleys surround us and broad mountain plateaus overlook our city which in turn yield in abundance farm and dairy products noted for excellenct quanty Our mountains and canyons are dotted with pure springs and lakes furnishing unsurpassed summer reNo sorts i I I No other city in southern Utah has manifested a greater interest in educational i educa-tional matters The Parowan stake academy located at this place having been supported and upheld by the 11 citizens Under adverse circumstances has outlived all similar ui I established in southern Utah Since the establishment of this I Ia tutiuix tile average attendance has been upward of 100 pupils The interst manifested inour district I schools is very commendable Special school taxes haye been voted for by the people each year Our school building build-ing furniture and apparatus is unequaled un-equaled in southern Utah During the present school year seven teachers pi t been employed In the district schools for three terms of ten weeks each and four teachers are now engaged en-gaged in a further session of five i jeks With a school population of 4Q the attendance the present school i year numbers 385 I This i years expenditures amount to over 3700 of which nearly J1900 has I been raised by local taxation i j i i ir school district is free from debt This district pays 49 per cent of the i entire taxes in this county for state and county purposes I i i j satuie has designed for us the most i i suitable site in southern Utah for the i i t establishment of the L P Harmon both of whom from Washington countywho set forth I in an able manner many reasons why the school should be located here These with other reasons and innumerable in-numerable advantages
