Show A NEW SCHEME FOR PLUNDER The government has been very generous i gen-erous to those who fought to save the I Union more generous than ever was j government before The soldiers were I worthy of this generosity and the people I peo-ple have not begrudged it and the I soldiers have appreciated it all But there are some of those who fought In the war who are making too many pretensions acting as though the government I gov-ernment belonged to them Some of these are those who have held office under the government and who are showing far more of a grasping than a patriotic spirit The Washington correspondent of he Chicago Record writes his paper that some of the old soldiers who are I being restored to their former positions in the government are not satisfied I with an assurance of future employment 1 employ-ment but are endeavoring to obtain evidence upon which they can bring suits for damages against the govern I ment for the wear and tear of mind damage to reputation and loss of compensation com-pensation because of their discharge by the Cleveland administration There are several laws on the statute books which were intended to protect veterans vet-erans of the late waj who are employed I em-ployed by the government Among others Is one which gives them preference prefer-ence for appointments over other persons i per-sons and prohibits their discharge except I i ex-cept for cause Some of those who arc being put back Into office are endeavor Ins to secure letters from the heads of I departments certifying that their restoration res-toration is due to the fact that they were discharged without cause and purely for partisan reasons If this fact Is established the officials who discharged dis-charged them were guilty ot a violation viola-tion of the law and according to the construction of some attorneys the > government is liable for damages sustained I tained and losses incurred thereby I which the Injured veterans believe they I f can collect throuh the courts Those who are concocting and pushing push-ing this scheme along are entitled to no sympathy and will not get it There I isnt a spark of patriotism in it nothing noth-ing but a desire for plunder It would j not be at all surprising if some of the j pension attorneys who have exploited I I the governments bounty for so many I years should be found to have set this I new scheme on foot some of them are 1 capable of anything If they have those who permit themselves to be made the instruments of furthering it are no better than those who are using them Such things only tend to bring discredit on the noble army of veterans veter-ans who sacrificed all to save the Union and only accept of government I aid because of their dire necessities |
